The Weber speaker is much less efficient than a Celestion G12H30. It also has a completely different sound. The 5E3 sounds a bit like a Marshall through the Celestion (really) but through the Weber alnico it is much smoother, darker and compresses a WHOLE lot. It is kind of like there's only lower midrange coming through. The description on their page says "woody, reedy" tone. That is an apt description. The bass is looser with the Weber. It really does sound like Neil Young's tone with a Les Paul when you crank the amp to 12. Loose bubbling distortion, almost like a fuzz pedal that is set way bassy and high drive.

It is still more than loud enough at its full power to gig with, even unmiced. I won't be getting loud cleans though.

I'm not sure what changes will come about when the speaker breaks in but from the amount of compression and what must be speaker crunch, I don't think its going to take too long to break in.

The cab looks amazing too, early BDay for me this year haha.

Ja it delivers, like I said, it sounds a lot different with the Weber speaker than through the Marshall cab. This makes it all the more clear to me that speakers make a major part of an amp's sound.

I can try and explain what it sounds like but I'd rather just make clips with the LP and the Tele and you can hear for yourselves ?

Edit: It comes in at an almighty 14kg and with the quieter weber it is just loud enough for gigs I think. That makes it a very nice amp for home playing (With the VVR).

Looking forward to hearing clips. My Tweaker weighs in at 13kgs. It's no AC30, but gets heavy enough when you need to slog a bunch of stuff back to the car! ?

Haha, I know of some well meaning but misguided folk who owns ~40kg amps. THAT's a slog.

So I've been playing this amp for a while now. The speaker must be breaking in because it is getting louder and less flubby as time goes on. Strangely, this amp is much louder at minimum VVR than my 18 watt, so much so that I can't really crank it late at night. Sounds great. Its really awesome having a classic-style combo amp that I can carry in one hand, the 18 watt head and cab can be a bit of a mission to carry up narrow stairs and load into cars, the scars on the cab's corners are proof ?

I installed a NOS JAN 5Y3 and some tungsol 6V6GTs. I didn't perceive a massive tonal change, and at full VVR this amp is still really loud (the NOS 5Y3 drops the B+ to about 360V instead of 400V), I don't think I'll play it at full power even at gigs. Feel wise it is very similar to the 18 watt, cleans up great if you pick softly or turn the guitar down, and the overdrive would put a smile on even the most ardent Marshall fans' faces. It puts out an immense amount of bass compared to the 18 watt, which is most likely the source of the 5E3's flubby response. I can change that but I'm not going to, I like this amp a lot ?

Clips coming as soon as I get organised about it ?

Well there is hope for me yet...i'm down to one +40 Kg beast and a head & 2x10 setup.

We must meet up sometime. Ever since seeing the pics of your lovely amp, i'm dying to play it.

Nic (Loock) can help here. He's got a pretty decent HD camera that records AV great.

I have a decent enough interface and a decent enough mic (Scarlett 2i2 and Audix i5) so I can do the audio recording reasonably well. I may make a plan with video, I guess I can use my mik-en-druk camera for that and match the audio afterwards but I'll probably just do audio.

Yes, we must meet up again. Maybe its time for another Cape Town get-together thingy somewhere?
