Weekly recording challenge idea

After listening to some of the entries lately I think it would be cool if we could split the challenge into "leagues" of sorts. I think it will make the challenge more accessible to newer guitarists. How about "Beginner", "Intermediate", "Master" and "Rene" or something along those lines ? If you win 3 times in your league you get moved up a level etc. It may help getting more people involved, your thoughts?

Something to record on to - can be a computer with software and interface or a dedicated recorder like the Boss BR series

Something to listen to your recordings - headphones or speakers. Headphones are essential if you are recording with a mic

A way to capture your amp's tone - a microphone or if your amp has a "recording out" you can use that to DI (direct inject) the amp sound

@Alan , I have tried recording my Acoustic via my Zoom pedal which has an usb interface through my Laptop. The sound is okay but lacks that acoustic sound, Maybe I will need to mic the guitar as well, but what should I use as to connect the mic to the laptop, what products are available.

My 2 cents: Feedback from the pros and more experienced would help the rest of us a lot too. Specifically things like the composing side (song construction, harmonies, etc.) and recording technique.

I also like the idea of a beginner and advanced category. The group can decide when someone is ready to compete in the advanced section.

Agreed. I will definitely post something in the next couple of weeks when I have some time off. I've long made peace with the fact that I'll never be David Gilmour, will never earn one Zim dollar from my music, and my compositions generally sound like something between a New Age tune and a porn movie soundtrack...and that's when I tried to write rock 'n roll... ???

To get an authentic acoustic tone, only a mic will do, ideally a condenser. If your interface doesn't have a mic preamp built in (many do), you can get a small mic preamp (there's the Behringer MIC100 valve pre for under R600 new). Micing an acoustic can be quite an art - I've got an article about it here.

What would the criteria be for Beginner or advanced.
I have been playing for jonks but would consider myself not a beginner but definately not advanced either.
I taught my brother how to play and he practiced about 9 hours a day and got to advanced very quickly.

this is the conundrum , are you a beginner guitarist but expert sound engineer/ recorder

or are you a expert guitarist but a newbie recorder / engineer.

both would effect the out come....

@ Tailon & Squonk - You decide which you are - Obviously if you win all the time at the beginner level we going to boot your hiney into the advance level. BTW I would have no shame at entering myself as a beginner if the challenge required a skill such as my singing abilities.

Yes it's still heavy for Thursday midnight. The theme came to me through a Beatles number "I want you (She's So Heavy)". I was watching "Across the Universe". There is a scene where a platoon of the new conscripts dressed in their underwear fresh from their medical are carrying the statue of liberty on their shoulders through the jungles of Vietnam to this song. To me that is spine chillingly HEAVY.
