Intro eventually

Hi all, 8)
Been a member for a few weeks now but have been to busy to introduce myself.

Am a bass player but find my way around a electric and accoustinc guitar as well. Can read both convential music sheets and tabs. Am 56 and came to SA in 1982 from Belgium where I played in several dance/cover bands as well as a Big Band since I was 16.

Only for first year in SA did I keep up playing, and only since a year ago I picked up my old stuff and got down to breaking my fingers and a fe strings etc. You have no idea how painful this was. Almost back at the level I stopped years ago. ?

Need to get to play with other people now just for the fun of it, any type of music excepp the heavy stuff, am to old for that now.

Does anybody know of a Big Band that gets together once and while in Gauteng ?

Where in Gauteng do you live? There's a big band (IE many members, lots of brass and winds) that practices at Marks Park (Emmarentia). Don't know how often, but at least once a month (try the last Thursday evening of the month - that's when I see them there). They have a bass player.

Talking of the last Thursday of the month, there's an open mic night at Marks Park on those evenings. That might present you with some networking opportunities.

Where in Belgium are you from? I spent a year in Leuven, magnificent place and even better beer. I miss Westmalle Tripel and frietjes so much...

Hi, thanks for this info, will certainly visit them in Marks Park. Cannot make this last thursday am stuck in Middelburg(mpumalanga on business) but will calender it. Live in Rembrandt Park, near Lombardy East/Edenvale.

Hi, am from Antwerp lived there 26 years, know Leuven very well, "studente stad" due to the Catholic University there. I hope you tried more than the Westmalle Trapist, in Belgium every "dorp" has its own beer. I like Duvel and Chimay(Bleu) tried over 1000 of them while I was living there. And nothing worlwide gets even close to the Belgium " fritte " simply the best in the world!
Enjoy SA, even with all its problems, it is noce to go back to Belgium on holiday and meet the old gang, drink the beers and eat the fabulous food there.

The open mic night won't happen in December, and I suspect the big band might not be too keen on practicing the last Thursday of the year. If I see them I'll ask when they meet.
