Any graphic designers out there - I work in Photoshop and just save my stuff as TIFFS or JPEGS. I get barcodes as EPS'S for some of the stuff I do but I JPG these and send them on to the artist for his layout work. And way back we got EPS text files that we used to just drop in or drop out stuff into. Now someone needs me to fiddle with a package design that has been saved as an EPS. Will it lose quality or data or anything if I work with it in Photoshop? All I have to do is change lettering apparently ... I've been trying to get info - they ( the internet fairies) say change it to a smart object ... it keeps all the info. Can I treat it as if its a bitmap or Tiff or a PDF and just drop text in and rasterise the text? ???

eps is a vector format so you will lose info of you change it to a raster format. My advice would be to turn it into a PDF or svg then work on it. That will keep the text as text and you can scale the image up and down without ill effect.

or learn to use Adobe Illustrator. AFAIK Photoshop can make do with a Vector file.

I have Adobe Illustrator and worked in it way back - so I'll try this as well - thanks Donovan

Photoshop can import EPS, but it converts them to raster format when it does, which kind of defeats the purpose of using a meta-format like EPS. I bought Illustrator specifically to edit the fonts in vector format files from an electronics layout program (I'm helping my wife, doing a lot of technical illustrations for technical college books) and it works well. Specifically if you are working with publishers and typesetters, it doesn't pay to mess around with the wrong tools for the job. PhotoShop, Illustrator and InDesign and you're set.

I read somewhere that 'make smart object' kind of is the cure for rasterise - this is a very vague interpretation of what was read at high (and irritated) speed. Trying to get my head back into Illustrator - very powerful but it looks like I am going to have to READ SOME STUFF.
