Volume pedal in pedalchain ?

Hi all, where do you place the volume pedal in the pedalchain ? Heard a few ideas and asking out of curiosity,thanks..

I've put mine just before my delay pedal, this way i can do volume swells that include my drives and will still repeat if my delay is on.

If it's high impedance it must go at the beginning of the pedalchain. Low impedance can go anywhere but first - usually before your time-based FX like reverb and delay.

It depends on what you want to do…

Volume pedal at the beginning of your chain (i.e. in front of drives) will affect volume as well as drive level of your drive pedals. It acts like a second volume knob on your guitar essentially. For this you’ll need a high impedance volume pedal because your high impedance pickups will be feeding into the volume pedal

Volume pedal in your chain (after drives) just affects volume without affecting the drive amount of your pedals. When in your chain a good place is typically after your drives, but before your time based effects. For this you’ll need a low impedance volume pedal because your pedals put out a low impedance signal when on. If you’re using true bypass pedals you’ll then need a buffer somewhere in the chain between the volume pedal and the guitar to make sure that there isn’t an impedance mismatch (tone suck) between your high impedance pickups and low impedance volume pedal when all your pedals are bypassed.

You can also put the volume pedal in your effect loop, which is what I’m doing currently. For this you’ll also need a low impedance pedal as the effects loop would be low-z (mostly… I think).

What values count as low and high impedance. Cause I used to have my volume pedal by itself, sometimes with a compressor. I got a little crazy with pedals and now it is 7th in the line and I only have the last little bit of the toe end of the sweep to use most of the heel side does nothing. What the flipping flip is going on?

High Z is 500K, low is usually 25K.

I have an Ernie Ball VP JR. I was trying to find out what the pot value is, and I can't. Does anyone know where I can find this out? Also where do I get replacement pots for those? Are they easy to find?

Look for the model number...

6180 = 250k / high impedance

6181 = 25k / low impedance

You could probably change to pot value, but you're going to have to disassemble the whole pedal. That whole string setup turning the pot looks very tricky to disassemble...

Edit: the low z one actually says "25k Ohm Pedal" on the back... the 250k pedal only says "Volume Pedal"

The spares for the EB pedals are generally available from the distributor (Musical Distributors/Bothner's), so you could get your local store to order one. The pot is the only real difference AFAIK, so you could even change the impedance by changing it.

That is awesome! I am going to order a 25K pot. I'm pretty sure mine is a 250K because it works really well by itself!

I can't find the model number. I assume it's on the bottom, but I bought the pedal with a huge strip of velcro across the bottom, so if the number is there, I'm not taking that off just to read a number. Thanks for the help everyone!
