Yes they are made in China. The body is expanded polystyrene. The weight comes from extreme amounts of lead in the paint. In fact, that guitar was actually painted white but looks dark due to the lead content.
It all started when a n00b emailed a friend in China saying," I am asking for you to make me a lead guitar so I can play like a star." (read in whatever accent you like)
Ha ha! Reminds me of the allegedly true story about a salesman in a record store in London. Asian tourist walks up to the counter and says "Haflu damp flapper?"
Salesman says "wot?".
Tourist says "Damp Flapper" then, slowly and with more emphasis "Damp.... FLAPPER".
Salesman says "sorry. Don't understand. Non comprende!" and shrugs.
Half an hour later the same tourist comes back with a copy of
Weasels Ripped My Flesh pointing emphatically at the cover and proudly proclaiming "Damp Flapper!"
