Marnus86 Hi guys, Earlier in the year I started doing regular gigs with two reasonably well known afrikaans artists. My current amp is a Marshall AVT100XT tribute which I love...or is that loved? Last Friday night I had a gig at Firkin centurion and they just bought a nice backline so we dont need to take our own. After spending the night falling in love with a Mesa Boogie 5:50 express, I started to read these pages again to see all the opinions and feedback you gave guys looking to get into tube amps. Problem is being a full time student playing only about 5 or so gigs a month, dispoeable income is pretty rare. so with this in mind... I have a camo Epiphone Zakk Wylde lying dorment that I'm looking to perhaps sell to serve as a considderable portion of what I have to spend on an all valve amp. Before I put it up in the classifieds I have just two questions 1) What would a seasoned guestimate be of a decent asking price? 2) Is this realy worth it? I love both of the items, especially the ZW, but it is the only way.... Thanks in advance guys
vic Question: Is the Mesa SOOO much better sounding than your current amp (which you love) so that you HAVE to have it ?
Norman86 Vic wrote Question: Is the Mesa SOOO much better sounding than your current amp (which you love) so that you HAVE to have it ? Yes ? But only because i understand his pain and still secretly lust after a Mesa Boogie 5:50 myself... Freaking awesome amp... but at over R10k for a new one... you might have to sell a lot for one! (i actually think its closer to R15k... ouch)
Marnus86 Hahaha, yea I heard about 16k new. Don't think I'll go for one of them, for that reason, but definately want valves. At some other gigs I used a fender hotrod that was awesome and a jcm800 and 900 both of which were also great. But nothing I've played on comparesvto the 5:50. I need more mids live than the avt can give me. I don't realy use my amp at home (guitar rig usualy does the trick) or in studio so it will only realy be used live. Another thing that I didn't mention is that the zakk wylde (bought and checked for originallity in store with the guys at music connection) has a small ding in the clear coat at the top, about where your arm goes over. It's only the poly though and the wood and binding is still perfect.
epictring I recently bought a Mesa Rect-o-verb WITH a flight case for around 9k used. So why not have a look at the used market? I'll honestly never buy a valve amp new, they're made to last forever.
Marnus86 Thanks epicstring, wil most definately. Btw, can someone please tell me how to add pics to posts??? I have'nt a clue... ???
Norman86 just above the smileys... the second icon is a picture in a frame.. if you have your hosted on photobucket or facebook, you just need to add in the link between the image tags (the second icon) et voila! ?
Marnus86 Thanks norman, that was way too easy. hahaha Here are some pics if that helps anyone. Reckon I'll put them up in the classifieds tomorow anyway. Cant realy see the ding in that pic but the pic I took of it had some error while loading.
Marnus86 Wow that guitar is pretty dirty, sorry... In a bit of a hurry and played with it a bit earlier.
Norman86 No probs ? btw, on valves... i for one prefer the cleans of a 6L6 type amp... Fender Hot rod, fender deluxe vm, mesa boogie 5:50, my own albion tct35... Vox cleans are pretty nice too... but Im more of a 6L6 guy!
Marnus86 Same here, not realy even realy considdering the vox's. But it's purely subjective ofcourse. :-[
Norman86 you need to go test a bunch of amps and see what tickles your fancy... try youtube the lot as well.. make up a price range, and test above it too... and always look out for second hand deals! thats my advice! ?
