I was wondering what the average band gets paid for a live performance of let's say 2 hours. I am talking about a pub/restaurant type of performance.
So to make it easier let's group the different setups:

I know it is a bit vague and differs from one venue to another but an estimate or two would be great.

It really depends on the venue, and who the artist is.
Can range anything from a free drink to R1000+

Minimum R500 + R500 per band member. If long distance, transport charges too.

I am talking purely from a cover-band perspective. If you do originals only, make sure you have a steady dayjob.
Firstly, at pubs/restaurants you'll normally do 3 x 45 sets and not a 2 hour performance. Add to that travel, setup and breakdown time and you are looking at at least a 6-7 hour gig. Full bands (3 piece and more) very rarely get regular paying weeknight gigs and a 5 piece will get more or less the same pay as a 3 piece cos in the eyes of the clubowner both bands do the same thing. Your pay you command is directly related to how well you get the party going and how much the punters drink. Going rates for the "circuit" bands, duo's and solo guys in JHB is about 1000-1500 per man per night allthough 4k seems to be the limit regardless of how many band members. Private/Corporate gigs are a different ballgame. I've done gigs where they've paid up to 20k for a duo and 40k for a 5 piece. Those are rare though and any pro muso that proudly states that he only does corporates is talking crap.
Once again, all of the above is from the normal run of the mill pub/bar/restaurant musician perspective.

I recently played an acoustic gig with 1 other band member doing mostly originals with a cover here and there.
Got paid R1500 for around 4 hours (2 hours p/night for 2 nights.)
That being said, these gigs rarely pop up.
