This Months Challenge, to quote Adrian:
"This months challenge is a call back to our roots. More specifically our African roots. We are South AFRICANS after all and I believe it's important to play the music of our continent. So I will leave this challenge somewhat open; so long as it is AFRICAN"
This will be the last Challenge of 2013. As we are all aware South Africa starts shutting down for Christmas around 16 December and reopens sometime in February, so the deadline for submissions to be PM -ed to me is 10 December 2013. Entries can be up to 2min long
This is very open, Even the Parlotones are African

The entire Afrikaans Genre - from Beeskraal to the Grafsteen Sangers
African jazz - The Jazz Pioneers
Johnny Clegg, Hotline - 80's white people doing ethnic music
    Kwaito
    Traditional
    ETC

Disagree. Rory Gallagher was Irish, that doesn't make the blues Irish music (nor, for that matters, is it an English music).

A lot of Afrikaans pop music these days is just boring global radio-friendly mainstream pop with Afrikaans lyrics. Made in South Africa by South Africans, but "African"? "Hou My Vas Korporal", I'd say, should qualify as something intrinsically African, but I'm less sure about. say, Juanita du Plessis.
Don't over-analyse it. One great thing about the "open" challenges is the different interpretations. Also we tend to get more entries with the more open topics...

To paraphrase the late, great FZ: "Shut up and record yer guitar". ?

Was joking about the Parlotones ?

That's twice in one month >☹

But I stand by my comment. I don't think "African" has to be King Sunny Ade or Johnny Clegg or Sipho "Hotstix" Mabuse, but it shouldn't extend to formulaic pop just because it was made somewhere in Africa (which would make Macca's Band On The Run an "African" record).

Cool bananas! Great theme. I have no idea what I'll be doing but I will start brainstorming tonight. Should be a fun challenge.

Errrr, even I should be able to get something together given 12mths ? (Yebo, I know it's a typo, but I couldn't resist).

+1. It's good fun to hear persons interpretation of the topic in each entry...and the ensuing debate over if it's genre specific.

Sheesshh, could write a metal track and it would work well with the right beats...After 20+pages of debate on the Zef-lessness of Die Antwoord, there's another Proudly South African possibility ?.

That would be awesome to hear! I've often thought it would be cool to hear someone do an African metal song along the lines of Sepultura's "Ratamahatta".
I see this challenge has caused a bit of uncertainty.

Just to reiterate what Bob said, music that is made in Africa doesn't make it 'African' per se. This challenge is more aimed at genre/style. So with that, I leave you to go on and work your magic
Jeesh, I haven't even had a chance to listen to the previous challenge's entries (nevermind vote!), and a new one is upon us again. :-[
After some work on the house, I at least have my music stuff set up again in what has now become our Hobby Room 8) Will try and enter this one for sure.

Hmmm, just thinking now, is Boeremusiek considered African? Definitely South African, but not sure if it will be appropriate for this challenge.... :-\

I'd think so. But then I've got an idea in my head inspired by a sort of David Kramer/Karoo kitaar sound.
Afrikaans is African but African isn't Afrikaans.

Ja that's what I'm worrying about as well. ☹ Will have to see what I can come up with..... :-\

Like your thinking! Really enjoyed how Max & Co. intergrated traditional/tribal influences in Chaos AD and Roots.

I've experienced a Intlombe (Sangoma healing dance/manhood initiation - depending on western definition) or two, there's some great original beats to be harnessed there...Hmmm, got me thinking now - gonna have to dig around the recordings my mate made at the time.

My mentor does a fantastic Thrash/Death Metal rendition of Nkosi sikelele.

With emphasis on "Live and DIE for freedom" (read it in a deathmetal growl, it makes sense)
But lets say I make a track won't that make it african seeing I am south african and I made it ?
                                      Ubani uMzekezeke?
                                        a month later
Thought I'll give this one a whack. Should be laugh. My entry is in.

                                        Who else?
