Maybe the vox Night train is more what you'd like?
Depending on whether you want to use it for gigs or just at home, Get the AC15/AC30 have someone install VVR on it, or (home) look again at that Craig 2 Watt. Bothner's is selling a Vox night train cab with a Greenback inside now for R2200. (just the speaker cab).
Just been looking at that Night Train.... Looks ideal! Any idea on the price of the Night train head?
I may have found an AC4TVH and Cab that a guys selling, but I think if I manage not to afford anything else, this will be my choice, as its really not as expensive as I thought, even new! I think the Night train would be a prefered choice though?
Cheers

Bothners N1 City had a special on for a Vox head+cab, was R2800 odd on special, not sure which model though (are there different models?)
Edit: may have been this one:

One thing to take note of. I swapped my AC15 for the AC4TV combo and cab a couple of years ago because the AC15 was too loud for where I was using it . With the AC4TV, you have very little headroom for cleans. I only used the amp for my drive tones, had to use a separate amp for my cleans. So depending what you want to use it for, it does cleans, but at really low volumes, so has to be mic'd for live use. Other than that, I loved it (and it was not even the hand wired version)

Yeah, I have had a Night Train for a year or two, gigged and recorded plenty with it. Better than the Orange by quite a margin, but that's my opinion. Stick an Alnico Blues in the cab and you have some very nice tone.

The 15. I don't consider the 50 to be a night train at all. Different amp in many respects.

Maybe you could consider getting an AC15 for cleans and driving it with a good pedal for crunch at an acceptable room volume ?

Ok, so the past day has been quite productive, but seems to have left me with 4 options....
1) Buy an used AC4TVH + Cab for R3400 (refitted vaves recently)
2) Buy above new for R4400 ish
3) Buy AC15C1 (Single 12" greenback) new for R5500
4) Buy AC15C1 as above used for R4500 with footswitch (1 yr old, hardly gigged, original valves)
Which would you choose?
The Night train worked out too expensive.... even on special, its R4200 for the head, plus R2300 for the single 12" Greenback cab. Also seems to be considered a lot more dark sounding that the AC's. Didn't get the chance to listen ti it though. I'll be listening to options 1 and 2 tomorrow. And maybe 3.
Thanks again to everyone for your help so far.

Sean already gave one of the best answers: depends on whether you want to play clean or with amp drive and whether you will be able to open up the AC15 enough in your 'normal' use.

i'd definitely go second hand. +1 sean and gh.
i really think you need to go and play both before you come to any conclusions..
Big-G
Hmmm... I thought I'd replied to Sean's post, but clearly not....
I'm looking for that clean to 'just starting to break up' sound. Not looking for full on distortion. Anyway, lets see what tomorrow's playing brings?

Option 4 I think. Get a good pedal to drive it when needed. Vox takes pedals very well.
AlanRatcliffe
Option 4. When you get a chance, try it with a Blue and consider a crossgrade.

That's simply not true. It's a very bright, in fact often TOO bright amp. But let us know what the playing reveals.

I would say go with the Craig 2 Watter - Ala Big G style (your spec)
My rational is that seeing the AC15C1 is an all PCB construction, (I stand to be corrected), modding to suit your exact taste now and future, will be more difficult if not possible.
Whereas a point to point construction, is more flexible and is designed to suite your exact taste NOW and infinitely moddable in the FUTURE !!!! This is important, We seen member on the forum buying specific amps because they are trendy only to see them show up in the classifieds in a few months.
my 2c
Big-G
Thanks again for the replies guys!
With respect to the Craig 2w, I would love to go that route, but I just can't stretch that far. The main problem being that I'd still have to buy a cab, which will set me back at least another R2k, so that's back at the price of the night train option.
Whilst I'm looking at amps today, think I'm gonna try out the Lil night train too. That would then free up some cash for a cheap acoustic bass I have my eye on.
Think I may need to go get my gorilla suit and start stripping at birthday parties! That should raise some cash quickly, as people should pay me highly to keep my clothes on! Hehe!
Cheers!

15 is still moerofa loud ....

True, but with the 15watt, you can still control at what volume you get that "edge of break-up" whereas a lower watt amp (I had the AC4TV) your volume is limited, that break-up happens very quickly, and becomes crunch as you turn up the volume. So if playing live, you will
have to have it on a monitor.

Ja, I have to admit that the one thing that puts me off the AC4TVH is the lack of separate 'gain' control, which brought me to the AC4HW1, as that does, but then the cost shoots right up again, because its hand-wired.
If I find shortly that the AC4TVH's tone is what I'm looking for, and can remain clear and soft enough, then that will be ideal. Otherwise, looks like the AC15 is favourite?

The AC4 has a 1/4 , 1 watt and 4 watt settings too..... and 4 watts can be plenty loud....keep the 30 and add the 4 for practice ...win win
