Ok, so which one do you guys reckon is the device that would go the furthest regarding lifespan if looking at usefulness...

Also, what do you guys use Tablets for besides mail that is genuinely useful??

I have the galaxy, use it to surf and read, that's it. I don't see myself using it for work. Great battery life and super easy to use. I would imagine the ipad is similar.

I didn't choose, wife bought it for me and i really can't complain. Great device

One of my clients brought back the new Galaxy tab from China, the thing is amazing, 100 times better than the old one and so much better than the Ipad. Imagine a S3 the size of an Ipad. Nice. It's fast and pretty!

Even if im struggling between the s3 and iphone i would definetly go for the ipad in the tablet area... I use amplitube for all my guitar practising needs and garageband is also amazing on it. I consider a ipad to be a great tool for any muso. I also do most of my reading on the ipad and i use facetime to talk to my brother and dad who lives in dubai.. the new ipad mini also gives you added option if you want something smaller.

The only difference will be whatever OS suits you and the possibly better Serious(Guitar etc) Apps that are available for iPad

I have one of each for testing stuff at work.

I like the iPad a bit more as a device, and iOS is a bit more responsive than Android on the whole.

However, to get anything useful out of an iPad in South Africa means setting up a US iTunes account and buying voucher cards to get your apps. It's not a big deal once you've set everything up, but it's annoying to have to jump through those sorts of hoops in the first place (the SA app-store is absolute shit). There are no such issues with the Android app-store, and the apps themselves are priced in Rands which is quite neat.

I don't have GarageBand for the iPad yet since I don't have a connector, but I'm probably going to get it because I always have the iPad handy, whereas I don't always have a PC set up (I use laptops) for tooling around with my guitar and all my amp and related gear lives elsewhere. From what I've seen, for electric guitar enthusiasts, the iPad offers arguably the stronger set of apps.

Otherwise either one is a fine choice, and they both do e-mail, web surfing and social networking stuff perfectly well.

Good point as well. Also, can't upgrade the storage with a few extra SD cards like you can with a Galaxy. That's a major issue for many.

I'm not big on pads full stop. The whole portable device thing gets silly after a while. Mrs X-rated already has a Blackberry and a Kindle... oh! And a notebook machine at home. Then she starts GASing for a pad. My observations were
1) How are you going to get all that stuff in your handbag?
2) What will the pad do that you can't already do with what you've got?

I also think those pads look a bit dof when being used as a cell phone - but maybe that's just me.

My dislikes (most of these apply to both android and apple)
1) Lack of connectivity. I like to print things. I like USB ports. Now I have to get wi-fi everything? Factor that into the cost of owning one of these devices
2) I like a keyboard - or to be able to plug a keyboard in. And my choice of keyboard. I like to use an M$oft natural keyboard, and I've good reasons for doing so.
3) As Jack said, getting data to and from those machines without having to use some "cloud" or other intermediate service (which will use 3G bandwidth for something you should be able to do with a cable).

Please, I'm not a luddite and not automatically opposed to portable devices. I bought Mrs X-rated her kindle, and she loves it and I'm very impressed by it. It does it's job very well. I don't think a kindle emulation app is as good, and you certainly will get worse battery life that way. And the interface with Amazon is very well done. The technophobic Mrs X-rated had bought her first book before I had handed her the glass of wine over which I was going to try and show her how it works. Con: You are tied into Amazon.

What interests me are the new "ultra book" devices that have large amounts of solid state memory rather than a disc. They boot quicker, use less power, are lighter. They ARE bigger than tablet, but they address most of my other concerns by simply providing USB connectivity without having to buy extra little dongle thingies.

I think a lot of people buy tablets because they're cool and fashionable. I can't justify the expense myself. If I were using a lot of public transport then maybe as I could surf and type without bothering the people in adjacent seats. But right now... no.

I'm also not sure of their value as a business device. My employers have actually banned tablets from meeting rooms because they're too much of a distraction.

Agree with the above except for the fact that you are tied into amazon with a Kindle... it reads any mobi file and Calibre can convert epub into .mobis

Size drove me from getting a 10incher..
I thought about holding out for an ipad mini but decided against the waiting game.

So i got a samsung galaxy tab 7.7 at a hell of a steal on gumtree..
Specifically for the higher screen res, the expandable memory, and not having to use itunes to copy anything to the tab! itunes for my ipod nano was bad enough, to the point that i sold it!
the smaller size also helps in the sense that its more portable and for what i use it for, it works.

If i had to carry around a 10'er, my feeling is that i might as well carry around my laptop!

What do i use it for? well, reading books, magazines (but im longing for a guitar techniques app like ipad has), music, video, drawing and design, and then internet and email.
