I recently downloaded a few backing tracks of some songs that I would like to learn to play. I am finding it much more difficult to stay in rhythm than I initially thought, but it occurred to me that this is probably a very handy practice tool to improve your playing and have fun at the same time. It also seems to be a great way to learn when to start singing in a song (on what note for eg) and a good subconcious way to memorise lyrics. Anyone else use backing tracks to practice with, and any tips on how best to use them? ?
They're a good tool for sharpening your timing IF they are themselves well and consistently timed.
I've recently downloaded a clip by Rickey Lee Jones of a song of hers I am moved to have a go at. First thing is that she's all over the place with her phrasing and the timing of her phrases (admittedly, the lines, as written are very difficult to fit into a constant, intuitive pattern, so in this case I just shut up and try to learn). Second thing is she doesn't maintain a very consistent tempo, slowing down especially during the first chorus.
So they CAN be good if they themselves are good.
