Hey guys ?
I was wondering how cool it would be to run daily/weekly/monthly (not sure) quiz competitions where you need to SMS the answer to a guitar-trivia question (probably picked by Alan) to a number and each entry would contribute to a "pot" and the pot then gets converted into a voucher for the store of your choice.
ie: If you like Marshall, you get Marshall voucher, etc.
Then, it being a voucher, there's no excuse to use your winnings for anything BUT your G.A.S fund ?
Not sure about the finer details of this but, if you guys are keen, I'd be happy to set this up. Maybe we start of monthly to make the prize worth more and the admin for me a little less.
Your thoughts?

I'll play if alan chooses the questions ?
It could work, but how many people would you need to sms to make it worthwhile ?
Oh yeah, the questions shouldn't be "google-able"(just made a new word) , but should rather be pure knowledge one gets from reading guitar mags and watching DVD's.
It will be more fun if the answer is harder to find.
NorioDS
The only problem there is that if it's too hard to find, less people will enter which means less GAS money. So it should be not-common-knowledge but still findable, methinks. And then the winner is picked randomly. (I'll write a script so that no one thinks it's rigged and I'll also exclude people affiliated with GFSA from winning)

good idea Norio, How would you sort this with the Cell Operators? The charge per SMS, say R2 as you normally see, do they keep a percentage and how muh is it?
Manfred-Klose
That true. if its too tough, then only the regulars would enter(about 30 members i would say)
I'll write a script so that no one thinks it's rigged
...you mean like the lotto ? just joking ?
Would you recon we can get all the major music shops involved?

I don't mind coming up with quiz questions - even though it's difficult coming up with stuff that isn't too easy to Google but not impossible to find. Should also be something that people would be interested in finding out about.
One question though (I don't know how these SMS things work) - how much of a cut of the R2 do the cell companies take, and how much goes to the pot? If it's a low figure, like 10c, we'd need a LOT of entries to make it viable.

to be quite honest,i doubt it will work.....
if you gonna get a reasonable amount you gonna need to charge like R10 a sms and then noone will enter,i mean if the pots like R60,what can you get with that?that's not really supporting my GAS ?
it's a good thought,but i don't think the sms will work...maybe make it like you PM the answer to alan and if it's right you send R5 to alan's bank account and at the end of the month you pick a winner,atleast then you don't have the cell companies involved....or even wait until the pot reaches a certain value...
just a thought,probably will be t technical though

One question though (I don't know how these SMS things work)
Another question...I also don't know how these things work...we won't all of a sudden begin receiving all sorts of SMS adds on our phones as a result of entering? Like companies wanting to sell us timesharing, give us credit cards, Viagra etc...?
NorioDS
Hehehe, no I won't sell your details to the cellphone companies!
It IS a bit tricky, I'll admit. But that's never stopped me before. If it was easy, it wouldn't be fun ?
The trickiest bit is that we'd NEED 500 entries in a month in order to be paid out. Any less and the networks keep the $$$. So we don't really want the questions to be hard and we'd encourage multiple entries per person so we can get SMS volumes up.
We'd probably use the R5 per SMS option and the split would look like this:
R5.00 = Total sms charge
R2.86 = Network's share
R0.34 = GFSA
R1.80 = Winner
So if we get 500 entries, GFSA gets R170 and winner gets R900. Which can go towards whatever you want from any music-instrument store. We'd work something out with them where we could just call and give them your Name and ID number and then you just need to go there with your ID book to claim.
And to make sure we get enough entries...
- Get music shops involved - thanks Manny! (winner must register on the forum to claim his/her prize)
- Post about it in the newsletter
- Stick it at the top of the forum (where it currently says check out birthday entries)
- More?

Why not keep it in house Norrie?
Have like a monthly competition on the forum.Just seems that the SMS thing just wouldn't be viable...
Everyone entering pays 10 bucks or something into an account that go's towards a shop voucher.Get a question or post a task from Alan that needs to answered or completed.
Week 1 - First 30 entrys that are right go on to week 2.
Week 2 - First 20 entrys that are right advance to week 3
Week 3 - First 10 entrys that are right advance to week 4
Week 4 - Question/Task is posted and the fastest to PM wins.
The questions/tasks shouldn't too be hard at the start and can get more difficult as the weeks go bye
They could also be a learning curve for us.
The shop vouchers are a great prize as well....

It's actually easier to do the SMS thing than you can imagine. I've worked with SMS competitions before for clients and it's a cinch to maintain. Which is what we're after, something that adds value to you guys without adding more to our plates. Coz our plates are full!
LMinnie
Could we get 500 people to enter ???

Amen brother!

The questions asked is going to be the crucial factor here. Wouldn't be much fun if its just a Google fest.
Manfred-Klose
We should probably advertise on gumtree to get more active members?
We could have another Video competition early next year, where everyone who enters should make a small advertisement with one of their original songs, could be different approach to impress some new members and get them involved.
NorioDS
Let's get something out of the way: Google. This is not about being the smartest GFSA member, it's about a bunch of people entering a competition to win R700 ?
We could have ANOTHER quiz with really h.a.r.d questions that can't easily be found on Google and winners of THAT quiz get a lifelong accolade, like a badge that says "Guitar Guru (5)". The number 5 shows how many you've won.
The other way to do something like this is to get Marshall or Bothners to sponsor the prize each month but then you can't choose where you get your prize and the prize size wouldn't grow with the forum but, if you prefer that, then we can start talking to the music shops!
MikeM
Why not have a nice chat to marshall or someone that has a couple of branches around SA and try and get them to sponsor like 50% of what is gathered, so long as we buy from them?

It would require the dealers to buy into the scheme. EG if my favourite shop is Norrie's Ibanez Heaven but Norrie wants no part of the scheme then I ain't going to get much joy out of the voucher.
So it'd have to be "pick a voucher to spend at one of the following participating dealers"
Also I'd want to know what would happen to all the numbers recorded. Somebody is going to harvest my phone number. What happens to that?
NorioDS
Bob, I'd only use them for picking a winner. We could do something like delete all numbers after a winner has been chosen. I have no interest in harvesting cellphone numbers.

Let's first do a round of 'hard' for the honour as described. We will be able to see from the number of SMS'ses at normal rate what the response is and that will make it easier to talk to shops. 2c. Bring on those questions, I'm curious!
