Are they saying they charge an extra R5,500 for slapping a fake Gibson logo on one? Somehow that doesn't sound like a good deal to me. That's fakes for you. A R1,500 generic Les Paul is suddenly worth R5,5k if you can convince the gullible that it's from the big G. :?

Sorry. That's all I can say to this often repeated rumour. They have a lot of money riding on distinguishing their USA brands from their Asian made ones. They would do serious damage to those brands if it was found out they were lying. They don't make their USA line ups anywhere else except the USA. There may be incidental parts and hardware made elsewhere, but that hardly counts. Gibsons are made in Nashville, Tennessee, USA.

The OP should have gone into the "Scam and Fraud" 'cause that's what it is....these can't be Gibsons, unless the seller rides the Epiphone -Gibson association wagon, which I doubt. ANY guitar coming from the East with Gibson on the headstock is a FAKE.

Exactly. And the point I was making is that rather than getting a cheap substitute for a Gibson, you are rather paying a vast premium on a very inferior Les Paul because it now has the mystic logo on it.

Not a chance...! He's selling "original" Gibson Les Pauls for ~R6000. So how much did he pay for each....excluding shipping to SA, plus the 14% import SA tax ?

TBH, I think there is a mistake somewhere in translation/understanding of either the seller or the reader or both.

My interpretation first time reading the ad is that whatever institute placed the ad is not meaning to purport that they are selling original Gibson Les Pauls (high profile ones) for ~R6000. You never know - maybe they're Studios, or Juniors? My guess is that the sellers intentions relate to Epi's, and that they don't know how strong the differences are between an Epiphone and a Gibson, and they are merely mistaking Epiphone by Gibson as Gibson. I mean he does state that he is selling no-name brand copies for ~R1500. I don't think there is a need to sound the alarm so vehemently unless anyone has proof that these are indeed fake Gibsons (the photos are nondescript, and nowhere to be seen is a Gibson logo). People that feel strongly about the potential miscommunication should contact the seller and advise that they change the contents of their ad so as to avoid further confusion/speculation/defamation.

No. You're not getting a Studio or a Junior for this money. This person sells generic Les Pauls. But mysteriously can also provide a "Gibson" Les Paul for a ridiculously low price (that would be a good 2nd hand price for a Junior, and an absurdly good price for a 2nd hand Studio). The implication is obvious. They can ask the factory to put a Gibson logo on it, and then the price goes up.

And no, it's written clearly on many Squiers, Epiphones and Maestros that they're made in China/Korea/Indonesia. Sneaky Pete was repeating a rumour that Gibsons are secretly made cheaply in Asian factories. I don't think such an implication was in any way malicious - it's passed around on the internet a lot. But it is utterly baseless.
