Sadly, I think a good number of our members are spammers. Maybe around 100 or so but finding them all would be a mission so we'll just let them lurk... for now ?

Norio I have noticed some very strange names of late. I suppose some would say Squonk is strange, but some of the names seem a bit dodgy.

Yep, I've definitely noticed the strange names. Looks like they were generated by a script but, still, I don't want to delete accounts purely on suspicion. I must see a pattern of a number of registrants with the same IP, etc, to do a proper job of banning them.

Information information information. Spambots come in various flavours. Some just harvest info on people / topics / the English language, others post topics and harvest the info on the replies, others just post a crapload of links to dodgy sites etc etc

That is why it is never a good idea to give your e-mail address or even your phone number in a post. Rather PM that if you have to. ?

The guys signing up on our forum want link-love. Some of them do what's called "silent-spamming" which is registering without ever posting (so you're not obvious) but they'll still link back to their site from their profile, thereby still getting a potentially valuable link.
Others will actually post and usually post 10 or more links at once for cialis, viagra, porn, etc.
However, on a broader scale, most bots are looking for 2 things:
- Email addresses
- And links
You also get "scraper" bots which go and scrape the content off a site for their own uses. Commonly used by competitors. Wouldn't work against us as that's plain plagiarism but still gets done in some industries.

When we signed our local RC forum up on google ads we also got a nice string of new unwanted guests, luckily I run a solid firewall and and so we could check all the sites out they linked to and quickly dispose of them. Adding the visual text thing to the signup solved that problem quickly though, and GFS has that in place...so ya I reckon you can go about cleaning up without too much hassle.
