Peg tuner repair

Hi Guys

I have a peg tuner that needs to be repaired. It one of those oldies that have all three tuners attached to one plate. The problem is that the D and G string tuner shaft has come loose from the plate. I have tried attaching it back onto the plate but it keeps coming off. I could get new tuners but I would like to repair these ones as they belong to a 1950s Hofner Commitee, which I would like to keep original

howsit... what area are you from?

It's often possible to transplant new gears onto the same plate to keep the look but get the tuners working like new. If you want to keep the original worm gears you have to find a pinion gear that has the same tooth spacing as the original.

If your screws are working loose, get some Loctite or other glue made specifically to lock screws and bolts in place.

In the picture, the G string Tuner shaft has loosened from the plate, so it just hangs loose. The same applies for the D string tuner shaft. The gears and screws are fine. The shafts are usually pressed onto the plate

Are there any tricks in repairing this or must I buy a new plate and transplant the peg heads. I find it very therapeutic to rather repair something and get it working. Hence it seems I might have to opt for the boring option of buying a replacement and swopping out the pegheads.

Where could I get replacement Tuners, and would the spacing between the three in line tuners be different or are they standard for all guitars.

you could take your guitar to someone in the area who specialises in guitars..

The standard Maxon/Dixon cheapie tuners most shops carry look almost identical to what you already have so as long as your spacing is right, I don't see a problem. Possibly they have been replaced already and are not the original tuners - wouldn't surprise me with a guitar that old. Screw holes might differ, but that's not a biggie as the plate hides any old holes (and if the old tuners ever go back on, the plates of those will hide the new holes). Hang on to the old ones just in case.

Yea it seems thats the most logical way to go. I'd rather have a replacement, than have a repair job breaking in the middle of a set.
