Nice work

Bob-Dubery

Just got back home from Chez Neon Gecko. I'd left the Morgan with him whilst I was on holiday. There was some minor damage to the neck of the guitar (which, I hasten to add, pre-dates my ownership) and which I eventually felt moved to address. The fix would require stripping and respraying the neck.

At the same time I dropped it off I mentioned that since a refret done at a shop in Johannesburg there'd been an intonation problem with the guitar, more noticeable in drop-D than in standard tuning, but there in either case and measurable and audible (6th string was sharp at the 12th fret, the other 5 were all flat by various amounts). Neon Gecko thought that addressing this might be something he'd rather leave to somebody else (I thought it just required a properly cut saddle, but what do I know?) and said he had a couple of people in mind. I left him in charge, told him I'd let him make all the calls, put some money in his account and went on holiday.

OK... so we always like to see pictures. Well I haven't got one, and it wouldn't show much. You'd just see a neck in perfectly good condition, looking like new in fact. So actually a great job by Neon Gecko, who has removed all the dings and done a very good refinish. The best thing I can say is that you can’t see the job has been done.

The intonation problem ended up being addressed by Costafonix. I'd told Neon Gecko that he should also ask whoever did the job to cut a new nut. The old one was fine, but looked a bit ropey. So amongst other things Cosatafonix fashioned a new nut and saddle from bone blanks. The setup is very good with the guitar easy to play, and the intonation problem is a thing of the past.

So, two jobs nicely done and the guitar now looking, sounding and playing very well.

Nice work, guys. Many thanks.

PS: Also met Refuogee at Chez Neon Gecko, and beheld the refinished explorer. Another nice piece of work, and nice too to meet the owner of that guitar.

Yeah i 2nd the recomendation on costafix's work , he did some awesome work on an old jazz guitar that needed total rewire and setup and nut , awesome work and quick turn around time , highly recommend costa's work

and neon gecko is still to do some work for me but a luthier friend who makes high end acoustic flattops has paid him a visit and seen his work and i heard glowing reports , and that says a lot as the luthier in question is nothing short of a perfectionist himself about guitars ,

so yes support your local techs , some serious talent out there
