something fun!!

long story, about a year ago, myself and graeme was designing a valve pre amp for guitar and bass to be used infront of a hifi, then Graeme moved and the project got put on hold, a while i contact Nicholas L to finish the build for me.
its is based around the Fender 5F1 pre amp section, which is one a few components. the transformer i had made at ellof transformers in cape town.

here is a quick sample of how it sounds recorded, signal flow: guitar > ValvePre > Soundcard > Reaper > Amplitube guitar plugin, for both L and R guitars, the bass guitar is just dry out of the Pre into the soundcard.
no mixing was done, and there is some out of time playing.

what i like about it, it gives the DI signal and extra oomf. i am still yet to experiment abit more, but so far so good.
for guitars its Ok, but for Bass it really brings in some character

and then to just give it an authentic look:

?Great to get some warmth of a valve into ss circuitry! What voltage is on the plates?
Has there been no problem with the high impedance out of the circuit? Maybe consider a buffered out?
not too sure about techical specs, youd have to ask nicholas.
but from what i can remember the valve didn't distort too much, we played around with resistors to get the right voltage.

there is a little bit of noise on the output, but not much, its like the noise you get from a cranked valve amp, which this circuit can pretty much emulate between the gain and output level adjustment.

i will do some further testing this weekend
DC should be in the region of about 260V I think... Can't quite remember the readings we had. ???
          a month later
i did some more tests, before i am going out to change some stuff.
this is a programmed drum beat with the kick signal sent to the pre amp and recorded, with the original kick in the mix as well.

the first one is with the 12au7 valve and the second is with the 12ax7 valve.

notice the big difference, the one is smooth and has sustain and the other one is tight and punchy

Sounds awesome! Can't wait to get mine. I have been restricted to Ampkit lately.
