Your "full house" of guitars?

AlanRatcliffe · 2012-10-05T11:16:11+00:00

So what do you consider having a "full house" of guitars? I'm not talking filling your house with guitars (Joe!), but rather what you consider your essential collection to cover all the sounds/styles you will use/play. For some this might be one of everything, for others it might be a couple of subtly different flavours of Strat. For others it may be just an electric guitar, an acoustic guitar and a bass. I'm interested in what For me it's a wide variety with some notable omissions and with the electrics more based on pickup type than other considerations. When I look at the holes in my collection, I don't think "I need a Tele", but rather "I need something with Filtertrons". So for me it boils down to eight instruments: Fender style electric with single-coils Nylon string Gibson style humbucker electric Rickenbacker style electric Electric with Filtertrons 12-string electric Fretted bass Fretless bass Anything more than this is either unneeded or duplication in my mind - If I have a Strat and a Tele, one always gets played to the exclusion of the other. The obvious omissions are anything with P90s, acoustic steels and hollow jazz guitars - none of which I'd ever play.

Oh Crikey. I cannot compete with Highway Chile.

I have a 1982 Gibson Dove, 1997 Blonde ES335 Dot re-issue and
just a 1962 Fender Stratocaster to gig with.

Not important, but I also have the neck of that bass pictured
on The Clash's 'London Calling' album, on the body of a 1980's
Fender Precision bass.
Pretty good repair job too.

I likely have quite a few years gathering kit than you Eric. Besides, you have some very fine vintage instruments friend. I only have two vintage guitars... my 1964 Fender Strat that I have owned since I was 17 or so, and an '83 Les Paul. My Nashville B-Bender Tele is a very nice instrument but it's a 2005. I would love that 335 Dot RI.

About the neck of the bass........ is that the real deal...the actual neck in the photo? That is quite the piece of rock paraphernalia.....or punk paraphernalia. Collectible I would imagine?

Hmmm... doesn't really answer the original question as five of those are basically the same guitar.

Just to reiterate: this isn't for your wishlist or to post your extensive collection:

what you consider your essential collection to cover all the sounds/styles you will use/play.

and:

It's my attempt to get people to look at their collections a little differently, think about what they have and what they need.

guidothepimmp

Oh right.. misunderstood...

Then it would be

Superstrat with trem
Hardtail with 2 buckers
Hollowbody
Acoustic
Classical
Something with a single in the neck

I have:
Hybrid Strat/Tele
Takamine acoustic
I need:
Les Paul

No amount of clever EQing is going to make a piano sound like a 7 string tele ?

Since I play 20+ gigs a month, my Full House is based on what I will use live. Hopefully if I have the money to buy these sticks, I can also afford a guitar-tech to tune them for me..
1. My trusty '73 Strat with humbucker in the back tuned normally.
2. Exact copy of above Strat tuned Drop-D.
3. Exact copy of 1 tuned to E-flat.
4. Standard Gibson LP normal tuning.
5. Taylor acoustic lined out and mic-ed with an AKG-C414.
I don't need anything else.

Right now, for playing live, I can create all the sounds I want with two guitars:

1) Fender Strat
2) Music Man JP Sig (w/ piezo)

The MM piezo is actually better sounding than my Takamine's piezo, so there's no need for me to cart the acoustic around anymore for band related stuff. I also really like the blended option with clean amp tones, it sounds fantastic.

I do a lot of volume knob adjusting with the guitars (especially the MM), and combining that with my reasonably small pedal-board and two-channel amp I have a lot of tonal possibilities.

For recording stuff at home I need to add:

3) Ibanez Gio Bass
4) Takamine Acoustic (I record both the piezo output and use a condenser mic to get a more authentic sound)
5) Yamaha keyboard (not a guitar, obviously, but for sequencing anything with VSTs or MIDI I need this)

That's it, really.

Ha ha. So it won't be soon then.

Hey Roy C.

Please explain your statement "Strat or Tele type"

The two couldn't be more different in almost every respect.
