Yeah, I've read through that entire LP build thread one day (didn't get any work done on that particular day). The attention to detail is simply mindblowing. I reckon that LP he built might be a more accurate build than some Gibson LP's. ?

Might? O_o The man spares no expense and ommits no detail. You could get a good couple of Gibson '59 reissues for the price of a Gil Yaron LP. And in case it's fisticuffs again, I'm not saying Gibson Historics aren't great, and very accurate. But they're a production guitar. These things are hand-built from the ground up. So for those who can't afford an original but must have every tiny detail faithfully replicated, people like Gil Yaron provide the "I can't believe it's not a 50 year old Les Paul."

Your'e right Singe....if you look at some of his LP examples I'm convinced that these are beyond that what you get from even the customshop. I mean check out his pups ! His '59's start from about $10,000.

Gil has no equal as far as I am concerned. His guitars go far beyond being "copies". To faithfully recreate a '59 Les Paul in the way that he does is almost in fathomable and to me is the ultimate compliment to the originals. One of his guitars would most certainly have pride of place in my collection if I could ever afford one.

There's another amazing guy, Bartlett, whose incredible build thread I followed on mylespaul. Final product:

What's kinda interesting is that the replica market tends to seem to like typical 'bursts rather than the most flamboyant that's the stock in trade of the production guitars (Gibson Historic, Navigator, Tokai, Bacchus). Often very subtle, and often distressed to look like they really are 50 year old guitars.

Putting the Gibson logo on the top is dodgy IMO. Clients demand it, and proponents say that such good guitars can hardly do Gibson's reputation any harm. But it still seems to me you could con someone into thinking they were getting a great deal on an "under-the-bed-'burst," and paying $40,000 for a $10,000 guitar.

Some of them that do put the Gibson logo on the headstock, mark them in other ways and locations, such as inside the control cavity, to clearly identify them as replicas and not originals.

Bliksem ! that's fantastic. Yip...the temptation will be there to add the G word and then sell it off as a whatever....

There's a guy here in SA who build or used to build Cape "antique" tables and small cupboards ......these could fool even a seasoned collector if one is not careful.....Thus great care is now taken to establish authenticity of such at some of our well -known local auction houses ?

Quick question, I see on Yaron's site there is a LP named a "Megatop". Any ideas what that is? Or is it just a particularly flashy top?

...matched. The term is bookmatching, splitting the wood like opening a book so that the grain left and right match. Do you by any chance have predictive text set to 'on'? ?

The most amazing thing to me were the dyes he used in the nitro so that it actually faded naturally from cherry, and checked naturally, but at high speed. You could be forgiven for thinking that these pics were taken years apart, but it was actually only a very short while:

I believe that the remaining colour is more stable, although it will fade further over time.

I still wonder why people want to fade this kind of beautiful cherry burst? Admittedly, I do like the lemon and tea looks as well, but to spend that sort of effort to make it look like its time axis is mesed up by 50 years ... awesome and useless at the same time if you ask me.

Depends on taste I guess.....I for one am not fond of cherry burst. However I think in this case he requires the enhanced fading of the cherry to get to an acceptable,almost authentic faded result.

EDIT: I guess what he does is to either add a chemical to the dye which accellarates its breakdown, or he pre-absorbs the catalyst on the wood before applying the dye, or he irradiates the cherry burst guitar with short wavelenght UV light (~280nm) for a couple of days to simulate the effect of years of exposure to light. That will also enhance the "checking" of the finish of course.

Those look AMAZING! And yeah, well done to YAron for not butting the "Big G" logo on. It doesn't need it IMO.

I don't like that cherry burst either. They look perfect to me when they're faded and I think it's great that these guys take the time to create that look as authentically as possible. to me, this process seems quite different to relic'ing where the guitar is made to look worn and battle-scarred. This process just gives the top a really cool colour. Look at the gloss on this one; to me it looks like a new guitar that's the colour of a 50 year old guitar rather than a guitar that's had 50 years worth of wear and tear. My connection's too slow today to look at the other pics properly though ☹

I personally suspect the cherry burst was a big part of the reason that sunburst Les Pauls did so badly initially.
