That you've heard before but it's good to be reminded every now and then...
HeyImAlex on r/edmproduction (but it relates to everything):
This is the best advice for anything ever. The internet is an endless vortex of information relevant to anything you could ever possibly want to learn or know or do, and people are naturally inclined to go on an absorption spree before they take the first step out the door. They want to be well informed. It's only natural.
They want to make sure that their workout routine is as perfect as it can be. They buy protein shakes and creatine supplements and set up a very specific regimen with a very specific diet and small windows where they will intake very specific macro ratios before they ever pick up a weight. They want to make sure their business plan is picture perfect before they take steps to make it a reality. They want to learn their software stack from top to bottom and have an impeccable architecture and design before they write a line of code. And they want to have every tool and plugin available before they start making music.
But the great secret is that none of that shit matters. You hit a wall of diminishing returns extremely quickly. You mask time that you should be putting to practice as "constructive" even though it's only tangentially related to what you're doing, even though, right now, your time is better spent sitting at a monitor in a dark room and fucking around. The breadth and depth of the world is massive and it's completely naive to think you can invest your internet hours and grasp everything in it without ever taking a dip into the muck.
Greatness takes practice. It takes hard work. It takes getting dirty. Make some music.
I'm on drugs yo.

I suspect the final line (there are no quotes here) is back to Jack.
Flip-side of this is that if you never bother to look into the theory you can spend a long time practising but never knowing what techniques are available. I know someone who worked on a film in which the director decided to use his usual cinematographer with whom he works on commercials. She is not a youngster and has produced good work in commercials for a long time. Crew and director looked on in dismay as it became clear to everyone that she had no idea about narrative cinematography - providing editors with nothing but static, undramatic footage, and wasting hour after hour of the day with long setups appropriate to commercials but not to narrative film-making.
The question I asked was, "How could she not know this? How could she not know that narrative film making is so different that she'd have to learn new skills?"
Because she had no theory. Only experience.

Yep, as usual there's a middle way... but the key I think is to get started and learn/tweak/gather equipment as you go along, not do all that for years before playing a note in front of anyone.
The cinelass example is not primarily a lack of theory in narrative film making imho, but lack of experience. All the long form theory in the world doesn't guarantee a poet will be a good novelist first time out (but it won't hurt).

A really nice debate starting here.
Hope it will pan out with some definition of "balance" ... but look forward to the journey to get there.
My own story is that I often get stuck in non-action for fear that I'm insufficiently prepared or don't know how to do it.
Happens a lot with woodwork.
Where I fear my incompetence will lead to danger or ruined wood.
Using the internet to just witness others doing it often leaves me with a sense of calm.
"He can do it, so why can't I?"
And it can inspire me to get out and try.
Usually successfully.

+1 on that!
I'm the same. Before I try any new type of repair, or work on an unknown guitar, I hop onto the net, and find all info I can on the subject. From the compendium of approaches and styles, I formulate my own method, utilising the info and then extracting from that, what I feel is the best of each source.
Inspires confidence in your ability to do it, as Wizard says ?

I've come limit my time and online activities to certain sites and sources, a lot of people use it as a crutch, people dont trust their own abilities or knowledge. But info on the infernal web cannot be taken at face value, one hundred pieces of BS for every gem, people creating false persona's of themselves to the point of altering photos, recently a case of child porn being circulated on the forums of some band. My job is hands on and I've become really good at it, to the point where people frequently comment about how easy I make it look. I did not learn this by reading about it, but by jumping in the deep end doing it over and over, when I started out I could not even afford dialup. I've met lots of people with the info on hand, Google can tell them who is the president of Takmenistan, but they can never act on it and put it to good use, its more info on a hard-drive, so does it actually help you live better? IMHO I'd say its a big NO.

that is possibly the best way to end an argument!
I've recently experienced the same thing...sort of. I've put in the work (painted 20 paintings)improved along the way, to the point that I've developed into something new, and now I'm on the verge of (tomorrow's the big day)getting out there and making them interact with the rest of the world. For that I needed info. While getting sucked into the internet one the one day I seemed to be getting lots of good leads, finding relevant contemporary artists that are on a similar wavelength to me and all, but in actuality what I actually got to help me in a PRODUCTIVE way was pretty slim. Then another day I went on to continue the sit- work before I do the footwork, and there I get a website SPECIFICALLY catering for someone in my position, with a map of the relevant venues, with colour coordinated things and everything. I didn't feel terrible inspired like the day before, but it sure as hell was helpful. Sometimes you hit jackpot and sometimes you're just farting around. That's all I have to say. I'm on drugs yo.

Internet works for me. ?
Monday night 10pm I get an e mail from a guitarist in Holland...enquiry through my website.
He's confused, he has his model numbers all mixed up and he's asking lots of questions.
I'm tired, should I reply now, wait till morning.
I reply, clear up his confusion and answer some questions.
He replies and says, btw, just out of interest what would model X cost me shipped to Holland.
It's 11:30pm now, I reply, I don't have model X in stock but I have model Y in stock, it will cost you $1880.00 shipped to Holland.
12am he replies, please can you send me some photos.
My eyes are closing, but I whip out the camera and take some photos, edit them, 12:40am I e mail him the photos.
1am he replies, how do I pay you, can I use Paypal.
Yes, Paypals fine.
1:45am I get an e mail from Paypal, you have received a payment from X for $1890.00.
Tuesday morning I set it up, drive to EMS couriers and ship it.
Some people say the internet is not reality, you need to get out more and get away from your PC.
In reality.
A music store would ask for the same guitar on consignment.
Most stores refuse to sign the part of the consignment document that says they're responsible for caring and looking after the guitar whilst in their possession on consignment.
They sell it, they get paid COD.
If I'm lucky, 30 to 60 days later I get paid.
The music store pays R3800.00 less for the same guitar than the dude in Holland did.
I gave up drugs 27 years ago. ?
