Drum Kit for 8 Year Old

My daughter has started learning to play the drums, and I'll need to get her something to practice on.

My first instinct is an electric kit, around the R5000 mark. So, Medeli, Alesi, maybe one of the entry-level Yamaha kits? Would make her practicing much less stressful on other people on the house (she could even use headphones).

That said, I've seen some basic acoustic kits that are considerably cheaper (brands like Tornado and Pearl).

The kit will live at her mom's house, and it's a pretty big place so might be able to get away with an acoustic kit as long as she doesn't pound the hell out of it.

Any pointers? Stuff to look out for? I'm a little loath to spend R5k on an electric kit as her very first drum set...but will save up the money if it's the best option.

I think there's a store doing a package of a mini kit, musician's earplugs, and 2 years supply of prozac and brandy. Anyone remember where that was?

My daughter is now 12. She started a year ago on a Tornado set that we got at cash crusaders. The first few eeks she did pounce the hel out of them >☹ and then she started to get the rythm and learned to play softer. Now, it actualy sounds nice to hear her practice. ?

I just bought the Alesis DM6 for my 6 year old son. It is very nice that he can practice when his little brother is sleeping or whenever.

But, I know it would not be a waste of money because if he doesnt use it I will.

They also have pads at on the acoustic kits at the music school which quietens things down alot, maybe something to think about too.

My sons drumming teacher also says the benifits of having an electric kit at this early stage outweigh an acoustic.

Forget the drums buy her a piano rather, ? i kid you not , drummers don't gig much with everyone and their dog using backtracks , but if you can play piano well , there are endless pro and semi pro gigs for pianists , so if shes musically inclined break her heart now and start piano lessons , she'll thank you later , even if she does not go pro , a good pianist can earn well as she studies at uni, or part time , a bankable talent even more so than guitar by a lot

Electric kit makes a lot of sense early on. Aside from the noise aspects (which are major - even the tapping of an electric kit with headhones can drive other family members mad) an electric kit can be set up a lot more compactr than an acoustic, which is great for a smaller person - especially a kid and takes up less space. The kid's size acoustic kits are junk, they sound like crap and fall apart quickly.
