However, if I were to say Gerrie Coetzee was the greatest, well that would be arrogant.
I don't know about "arrogant", but a sense of humour and a thick skin would come in handy.
But if you say that Joe Louis was the greatest and that he didnt get his first bigun by Sonny Liston taking a dive, then you should be taken seriously.
I generally steer clear of saying anything or anybody is the greatest. Ask me to choose between Moss, Clark, Schumacher and Senna and I'll tell you they were all the greatest of their time or that they're all out of the top drawer or something.
The only case I push, and it's just to be ornery and to annoy the sport of sports "expert" who is really dealing in fan boi patriotism, is for WG Grace as the greatest cricketer of all time. To be fair, and if you're a scholar of the great game of cricket, Grace has got to be amongst the very best.
I use the word "greatest" far too much, it's a bad habit, character flaw on my side.
I think I use it as a means of showing the utmost respect to the particular musician or sportsman, etc.
As far as I know greatest is also plural, greatest can mean one of the greatest, so I'm covered. ?
I find the cricket scenario difficult to debate.
I can only come up with one greatest in cricket, IMO, that's Shane Warne.
I can't explain it, Murali took more wickets against the same batsman, but Warne is another one of those inexplicable sportsman that rise above everyone else...in respect to Warne I feel obligated to call him the greatest. ?
But, your knowledge of cricket is far better than mine, obviously you've studied the WG Grace career and I haven't.
I can't disagree with you because I just don't know.
