Which dynamic mic for recording guitar cabs

I looked at the SM57 and the sennheiser e609, is there any other i can go look at?
For the purpose of recording a guitar cab.

I have used the Sm57 before, and was pleased with what i heard.

Sm57 as you mention - great mic and good for many other things too. Sennheiser MD421 is probably my second favourite dynamic for guitar. e609 I don't know, but I guess it's an update of the old e606, which is pretty good for high gain amps, but a bit too coloured for my taste.

Of course, my all time fave mic for amp is a Neumann U87, but that's a condenser and ultra pricey to boot.

they are a bit out of my price range!!!! but really great german quality, wish i could just hold one in hands for a few seconds, nevermind owning one........

I also looked at the MD421, also one of my options.
For type of styles is the MD421 for.......blues, jazz i might think? dont know

The Audix OM2 is a dynamic Vocal and instrument mic inthe same price group as Sure SM57 & SM58 (slightly cheaper), they are available in SA from Marshall Music and get pretty decent reviews when compared to Sure

Any style. They work as well as the SM57 for just about anything and can take the punishment of micing a loud amp up close. They have a smoother, less upfront character than the 57 though. I like to have both on hand - the extra edge of the 57 always cuts through (especially on axis), while the 421 takes a little edge off a harsher amp like a Marshall.

Royer121, which isn't dynamic but if you use the 121, 421 and 57 together I was told it gives great results. I haven't been fortunate enough to get my hands on a 121 to do some experimenting. :/

Jens Bognren (among other great producers) use that mic combo which I'm still trying to figure out but I think Opeth's Ghost Reveries have used the 3 mic combo mixed with a pod but slightly.

The u87 is good because it's like an ear that records lol you basically get what you hear. But it's EXPENSIVE!

To be honest, you can't go wrong with a 57. It's sorta known as "the-swiss-army-knife" of mics as you can mix up a whole drumkit with it and guitars and vocals (not really the best option in my opinion but it does work) Most guitar tones on the latest metal albums on RoadRunner for example have used a 57 ? (I think I'm repeating myself)

I use the i5, which is really similar to the 57 in frequency response, but not as middy and a TAD bit less nasaly. It sounds a little warmer and smoother.
