Guitar for me?

Hey!
I'm interested in buying an electric guitar. I already got some experience with guitar but not electric.
I wanted to be able to play almost anything on it, from 70s solos and riffs (like DEEP PURPLE or QUEEN) through green day and RHCP to Iron Maiden etc.
What guitar would you recommend me,
friend already recommended me Fender (Telecaster) or Epiphone (SG 400), however I don't know what to think about it, also they relatively expensive...

There are simply too many variables at play and unknowns, not to mention a little thing called preference.

Right off the bat i would suggest something with hss , or hh with coil taps. The obvious answer, go play as many guitars as you can over a few weekends at your local shop, and pick the one that feels right.

Ok, there are a lot of different options with electric guitars. But it's important to know that almost any one of them will allow you to play all of those different styles, even though some are especially set up for playing metal for example (they tend to have whammy bars that you can do more with without knocking them out of tune and "hotter" pickups that create more distortion).

There are so many brands that will do all this stuff at a decent price that we can't point out any one - we can only give examples.

So there are three big factors that come in to play in your decision:

1. How it feels.

You want a guitar that feels good to play. Sometimes good guitars don't feel good because they need to be properly set up - usually by a pro - to get them playing their best. But the weight, the feel of the neck, the feel of the fretboard, the placement of the controls, should feel good.

2. The Quality

Really bad, usually very cheap, electrics, like the ones you get at cash converters, may ultimately be impossible to set up properly, impossible to keep in tune, etc. Make sure you don't buy totally cheap junk that you could sink a fortune into just to make it playable.

3. The look

What appeals to you? What do electric guitar players you like play? Do their guitars look good to you? Find something that you're not going to be embarrassed to be seen with and want to get rid of in six months.

There are great high-quality guitars 2nd hand in the range of R2,500 - R5,000 from Ibanez, Yamaha, Cort, and others. Run your options by us and we'll tell you if there's anything to watch out for. Remember, guitars are not cars. 2nd hand is good. You get better instruments for less money, and the person who bought it at the shop took the hit - you'll probably sell it for the same money you paid.

Spend as much as you can on the guitar, and worry about amplifiers and effects later. The guitar will determine whether you keep playing or not, and enjoy it. The other stuff is really for performing or for fun. So focus on getting a good guitar.

Heh, gotta agree w/Guido. Although arranged marriages do work for some... :-\

No 1 & 3 on the list are versatile guitars - typically for rock and metal you'll want a (h) or humbucker in the bridge. I can tell you that a stock Telecaster is not going to ring your bell as a versatile guitar, the SG might.

As singe mentions, 2nd hand there are deals to be had, be patient and shop around. There is also classified section on this forum, and can be a great place to find a good instrument
