I'm actually a fan of Chorus, when done right, but yes, far too many chorus effects sound terrible.
The best sounding chorus that I have owned was an original Danelectro Coolcat Chorus. I loved the fact that it could be used subtly, and was not over powering, although it could do that too if necessary. Infact I liked this chorus so much that I used it for my bass, and it sounded better than ANY bass chorus I've used so far!
I've yet to hear the Strymon's though, so I can't comment on these.
