When does one need a buffer?

I see quite a few pics of pedalboards on other forums where there is a buffer at the front of the p/board. Why and when does one need one - just curious ?

If you have a complicated or big FX chain (especially if you run parallel chains), losing treble to or picking up noise from interconnect cables and plugs or if you're getting bad clicks and thumps when engaging true bypass pedals a buffer is essential.

Thx Alan. I was getting a loud "thump" when I switched the TC HOF on and off but only when using t after the Ethos before going to the DI and then to desk. I discovered that there is an internal dip switch to change the HOF to Buffered so will see if that makes a difference. If that doesn''t help I will have to move the the TC before the Ethos (Although I am not in the habit of switching reverb on and off).

I set the TC HOF to buffered and the problem is sorted.
