Classical on electric goes back to the 60s sometime when Love Sculpture (with Dave Edmunds on guitar) recorded Khachaturian's "Sabre Dance". That's the earliest instance I can think of, but there may well have been earlier examples.

Oh wow! This video must be the perfect example of why I dislike shred so much. ??? This guy has sacrificed EVERYTHING in his single-minded pursuit of speed. His tone is absolutely horrible, his playing is devoid of any emotion or feeling and the end result is something that I can't find pleasing on any level whatsoever.
