I remember an interwiew with members of Fairport Convention talking about how he walked into the club where they were playing, late at night, after his own gig, and asked to sit in. They were all right-handed, so he borrowed [edit]
Simon Nicol's Richard Thompson's guitar and played it "upside down" and, according to them that was there, played really well.
This is not the only such legend, though it's the only one I can quote book, chapter and verse.
Obviously he'd prefer, if possible, to play his own gear setup just as he liked it (and which he could set on fire, smash, hump and so on without causing offence). Opinion amongst that band, by the way, is that Hendrix was a very nice man with impeccable manners.
