What interests me as well is this. I've written three songs so far. I was told to be safe and register them with SAMRO, however when I tried it said your music had to have been commercially played for two years before you can register. That doesn't seem right to me, it seems because I have nothing being aired on radio, my music is also public domain... your thought on this?
Also a friend of mine recently got a recording contract at Brettian, they however told him that having a song registered with SAMRO (which is what he had done) means absolutely nothing.
Brettian are talking rubbish. If you want to receive money from radio airplay or live performances you need to register the songs with SAMRO.
From what I've heard you need to push SAMRO a bit, follow up constantly with them on the status of the songs etc and speak to someone directly.
In my old band we registered songs before getting radio play, just needed to be persistent. We were told some radio stations don't play songs unless they are SAMRO registered, but I'm not sure how true that is.
