I've never worked out how to strum with a thumb-pick (although it's clearly possible - Roy Orbison could go from fast up-down strumming to finger picking really easily).
Martin Simpson plays with a thumb pick and can get the fast up strum in when he needs it - but to do that he uses the index finger under the thumbpick, which is similar to gripping a flat pick.
I've heard remarks about Martin Taylor getting really fast up and down picking with a thumb pick, but I wonder if he doesn't do the same?
So I decided to rather go for hybrid-picking. It's a steeper learning curve using it with fingers compared to a thumb-pick but then you get all the advantages of flat picking and finger picking simultaneously. Small jazzIII type picks really help if you go that route.
An advantage of hybrid picking is you go can take you pick of picks. BUT don't listen to the experts! They never agree. Some hybrid pickers like the classic fender shape pick, which is way bigger than a jazz III. I guess it's a case of if it works then it works.
