If you want to show how good you can do what you can already do then vote for metal.

If you want to challenge yourself, explore new ideas and enlarge your own musical vocabulary then vote for funk. Or DADGAD. Or slide guitar. Or nominate an unusual time signature.

Or one track only - a single guitar track with no doubling (even by means of a pedal), no loops, no drums, no bass, no keyboards (actual or triggered by midi)... Any style, but just one track of guitar (one! mono!), with a mininum length of one minute and a maxium of two to test how completely you can play with no support and how complete your composition is. No midi. Any delay used must decay.

However, you point out an important issue, maybe even unknowingly; There are so many possible themes and so few challenges. Let's not repeat themes - especially not if they're sucky genres like metal ?

OK everyone hold on a bit. Let me just remind everyone what the themes actually are.

The one I proposed is: Nursery Rhymes in the style of Iron Maiden. NOT just metal. It is more specific and hence more challenging than just going jigga jig jigga jig jigga jig jigga geee gee. weeedly weedly weedly weedly weeee!

Deefstes proposed a more general theme called Funk. Wah pedals and whatnot.

I agree with XRB that these challenges should be more challenging, however I also understand that not everyone likes the restrictions. I chose the theme I did because it imposes a few rules (must have melody, try and sound like Maiden and the dual harmony leads is something more challenging that most of you realise.) but also allows a lot of scope.

Anyway, that's my 0.02 ZAR. The vote is going towards a general Funk theme and that's OK too but in the case that it is funk, can you, Deefstes, come up with a shortlist of requirements that the entries must adhere to? There must be a challenge aspect else instead of jigga jig jigga jig we'll have wikki wah wikki wikki wah wah and so on.

Good point. The vote isn't just for metal vs. funk.

I'm not sure I want to be much more specific. I think Funk is a fairly unique genre that a song should be fairly easily recognised as such. There are many elements that give funk its sound and any combination of them should suffice. You don't HAVE to use wah pedals, you don't HAVE to use slap bass, those are just some of the common elements in funk but there are plenty more that you can draw from.

I'll write a more detailed theme which Renee can post in the new challenge thread (that is IF funk wins through in the end) but I don't want to be too restrictive as I enjoy hearing people's different interpretations of one genre - like we had with Blues, Rock 'n Roll, Rock etc.

Having said all of the above, maybe Renesongs can bring some sanity to the situation ? We simply decided to put two themes to the vote but what are the rules in a situation like this? Maybe we should leave it up to Reneesongs, being the challengemaster, to plot a route forward.

Haha. No, I'd rather try to come up with a popular theme and have people vote on it. That's the only way I have any hope of winning against EZ in a head-to-head. The Crossroads style guitar dual would see him slicing my sorry ass to pieces.

Also, it's a lot of effort to record another piece, simply to reach a decision for a new theme.

There's no rules for this. If the funk vote wins out by the time Renesongs sees this the theme is whatever you say it is. I'll enter either theme either way.

Well Done to all that entered and particularly EZ and deeftes for for tying for pole position. Luckily I have a topic from Mays challenge champion Greg that I was not used . Your two challenge topics will be kept in reserve for a future date. 8)
