Hehe. Well I didn't see my piece as fit for entry THIS time - I done got the songwiters blues. Pity. The blues theme was particularly suited to my lack of proper recording equipment. Hopefully I'll manage more than "Mediocrity in E minor" for a future challenge. Will keep working at it and just enjoy listening to this months entries for the time being ?

One thing... Blues in 3/4 seemed to be a common theme... was contemplating something similar myself! ?

Alright, I've had some time now to listen to all the entries. Great stuff there guys.

Jayhell - I like yours best by a large margin. My first impression was that it wasn't really blues but in the end I realised that it's every bit as bluesy as something like Cream with Eric Clapton. But a very well polished piece. I am also upset that you didn't allow downloading - because I want to download the song and put it on a CD so I can listen to it in my car ?

Joe - It's great to get something from your pen for a change. And I enjoyed your entry a lot. I like the fact that it has a strong hook which gives the song a very particular theme. It's the kind of thing that lingers in your head long after you've listened to the song. This is what I was hoping to achieve because too many of my attempts simply sounded like a finger exercise in the A minor pentatonic more than it sounded like an actual song. Well done!

EZ - Awesome tone! At some points I was convinced that you recorded with your new Tele but some of the crunch sounds like it could come from no other guitar than your LP. What did you use?

Jayhell, I like that yours had a rougher, dirtier sound. It reminds me a little of Jeff Healey's version of "Yer Blues"

Joe, that organ sound adds a really cool bit of flavour. Smooth guitar playing too.

EZ - awesome tone and dynamics.

Deefstes - that swell effect at 1:33 is awesome. Great playing all round though!

What? You mean you can't tell whether I was using my oxygen-free bound-with-angel-hair cables? ?

That's all the Les Paul through the 18 watt. The amp was prob around 6 on the volume dial and the rest was done manually from the guitar. Mic'd using an Audix i5 into a Scarlett 2i2 into Ardour in Ubuntu. The quieter bits is the neck pickup rolled down and the louder bits is the bridge pickup opened up.

Good entries everyone! The standard for these challenges have gone up since I last entered a year or two ago...

Sorry guys, First time, I'll make it downloadable next time, ~~can't seem to change that now~~. As I said I tried to step away from the traditional thing and the whole thing wrote itself in the end. Maybe not so bluesy as it should have been, but alas, I had great fun making it. Deefstes, you will have to wait till I record the full version of the song, then I'll post it somewhere. Can't wait for next month, I hope the winner chooses something we can sink our teeth into again. ?

Good stuff guys, well executed.
Went with Jayhell, it was more upbeat and rocky. Could hear rocks bluesey roots there for sure.
The others were a little too laid back for me, true blues tho, made me wanna hit the bottle and my wife with a bottle at the same time. ?

I'll be happy to pass the decision for a new them on to EZ (as long as it's funk 'cause I've been wanting to pick funk for some time now ?)

What d'ya say EZ, shall we have the peeps bust out their wah pedals and slap basses?

Or how about EZ and I both submit a theme which goes into a poll that runs for a day or two and the winning theme is the theme for the next month?

Theme 1, would be insane!!!! Get that gray matter churning and then have the Funk theme as a backup.

Also a cool idea but I would suggest that we stick to just one. We've had dual themes before and it makes the voting very difficult. I mean, how do you weigh a funk groove against Jack and Jill went up the hill to slaughter Mary's little lamb?

I think we'd be better off just picking one theme but if it's Iron Maiden I'd probably sit out on this round. I don't think I've listened to one Iron Maiden song in my life ?
