My friend's looking to buy a new electric guitar, but in the pack, where you get the guitar, amp, etc. Available money is R1500, any recommendations? He's going to be playing more hard rock and metal, but also the old school rock/metal.
Thanks ?

"The Starter Pack" is what I started out on lol and I even still use the 10wat amp for practicing to this day.
I think the 'quality to cost' ratio for the starter pack is sufficient to...well...start out on lol.
As from that you can tell if you are enjoying playing guitar a year down the line and want to spend a lot more money on a better purchase afterwards OR if you'll stop playing and regret spending all that money on something that's more expensive than the starter pack.
I probably didn't explain myself too well there ? but I hope the point got across.

It's coming up for Christmastime and then every store will offer a decent starter pack or five or even put together their own. I'd wait until they are all available then look around then - you'll see a lot more range and a lot more value for money. So just hang ball a week or two and then phone around see what is available then ask again - your friend will probably end up with a better guitar and amp or get the same stuff for less.

Your friend might also consider buying second hand gear of a-brands. In the end if he does want to sell he can do so at very little loss whereas nobody will want to have the starter crap. Plus if he does want to continue playing he'll have a lot more fun with the better gear and it will last him longer. Cheap = cheating yourself.

I would always pick up a guitar and feel it's .... uh... "feel" before buying. Look down the neck from the headstock and trip out on the mesmerizing row of frets. You should only see gentle curves in the neck; any radical bumps in the fret patterns, esp. close to the join at the body, and I would move on.

He's not getting anywhere with 1500, even the cheapest packs are more. He should save up till he has like 2000-2500 and then get a decent pack or if he is will to save up R3000 he can get a squire bullet strat and a microcube which is just about the best starting combo for the money. I bough a cheap pack i lovd it for a 3 months and then I heard real amps playing and ever since than i absolutely hate it! I'm saving for a vypyr or Valveking!

What Kind of music does he play???
If he's a shredder maybe a Ibanez GRG Pack...
He could also look at the LTD M-10 pack which is very simmilar to the Kirk Hammet Signature.
I also saw some LTD F-10 packs floating around...thats if he like a wierd shaped guitar.
but in all honesty, I rather get a mid ranged Ibanez RG. At least a RG321, buy a ibanez valbee (5 watt valve amp), which completely destroys all other 10watt amps in those packs and a pickup replacement is a must. Look into Seymour Duncun, EMG, Dimarzio.
