Being past your prime as a recording artist and past your prime as a performing artist are not necessarily the same thing.
I have seen some awesome shows of artists "past their prime":
Billy Joel put on an awesome show, but he also has a huge catalog of hits to draw from.
Same for Sting.
Collective Soul was great at the first Coke fest.
U2 was blah
So yes there is difference, but we certainly attract plenty of acts that are past their sell by date. Next year the Chili Peppers are coming. What have they done lately? What may save the show is the amount of old material they can draw on.
