Rhythm training ... harder than it sounds

We all wait at robots with our indicators ticking.

Tap the steering wheel in time.
Then do it so accurately so that you can't hear the indicator anymore!
At all.

Then double time it ... so you still can't hear the indicator.

Harder than it sounds.
But very good rhythm training.
And you can do it often.

I do that without realising, usually practising hand to hand triplets (triplets where the accent changes from left to right hand). Drives (no pun) my wife to distraction. The only problem is most indicators have a swung timing...

i find myself doing stuff in rhythm with just about anything, like walking and every day things.

I'm currently forcing myself to do fives and sevens. My default seams to be six. Once in a bank two, security guards with hands on firearms questioned me about why I was so nervous and insisted on searching me. I had been absent mindedly taping some songs rhythm pattern.

The timing between the beats is not even. Like a swing jazz beat.

As a guitar teacher, beginners who don't have innate rhythm
are very quickly assessed.

It is impossible to teach 'rhythmic feel'....people either have it
or they don't.

^ They actually do have rhythm - we just haven't unlocked it yet. When you get one that seems to not be doing the set rhythms, ask them to make something up. Frikkin natural polyrhythm gurus they are - although its not always a good thing.... anyway.

As for the thread, yeah... its a very good thing that. Although how Manfred does it with walking I don't know - apart from it being at a set tempo. When walking up a huge hill, put on some In Flames or Dark Tranquility and keep your feet moving to the groove (not the bass drum - you'll kill yourself).... you'll find you jusst walked it in like 5-10 minutes flat while having two cigarettes as well. Works well for mountain climbing too...

@ Wizard - heres something for ya. Now use the indicator as the drum beat and tap a groove inside it ?

Disagree.
I have seen too many people progress from "useless" to "damn good" over time.
Some of them took many years & tons of practice ... but they got there.

My djembe teacher claimed it related heavily to the degree of rhythm exposure as a young person and through life.
If you haven't had it early - it just takes more effort to acquire it later.

i would walk with a beat in my head...........lately i've noticed that i actually do a very small tap dance, if i have to stand still and wait for something, like the microwave........ ?

Walking is a brilliant rhythm trainer.

(i) Think of each step as a 1/4 beat (keeping it easy) count triplets landing on each step, then do the same over two steps landing on the same foot each time (right or left), then alternate, tap this rhythm out on you thigh now without breaking stride try and count a 5 over it ... try different combinations feeling different accents keeping track of the 1 etc. = serious multitasking. I got lost and/or forgot where I was going a coupla times messing my head up on this stuff ?

(ii) Sing, hum whatever a tune you're working on whilst walking, most excellent for finding it's groove.
