HI all
I stumbled onto this forum last night and it seems like a fantastic resource for guitar minded types. I am 42 (live in Wellington) and had a mid life crisis during the last December holiday. I have always liked guitar orientated music (Dire Straits and Clapton being favourites) but had always believed I wasn't musical. My brother in law plays a 12 string acoustic and joined us for the holiday, entertaining us in the evenings around the fire. I decided to "give it a go" when I got back home, and bought a Yamaha acoustic and started lessons with a teacher in Paarl.
I am now hooked and 6 months later my only regret is not having started a long time ago. I initially thought I wanted to play and sing campfire songs, but instead I now spend all my free time practicing barre chord shapes or reading theory and watching you tube instruction videos for inspiration and tips when my fingers are too sore to play. I can't play anything well, but I improve fractionally every day. Instead of campfire songs I now dream of playing blues and jazz and Clapton solos. Years away from it still but at least I have taken the first steps now.
As a result of me taking up guitar my 72 year old father bought a keyboard and an instructional course and is learning to play keyboard. This it turns out had been a lifelong desire which he decided to fulfill having seen the joy the guitar was giving me. So you are never too old to start! I look forward to spending time on the forum in the future.

I think we ALL regret not starting earlier, if I knew then what I know now, my first word would've been from the 6 string variety. Welcome, pull up a chair, make yourself at home, cancel all your plans...guitarforum is addictive... ?

If you get half as much enjoyment from playing guitar as I have over the years you will have had a great time.
