It may not have been abuse, or deliberate abuse. In all that shipping around there's a good chance of things being stacked on top of each other, falling off of fork lifts, banging into something else on a conveyor belt, getting jiggled around when the plane hits bad weather and just plain getting dropped. You can't expect that every parcel be treated with kid gloves at every step of the way. In the real world that's not going to happen, not at cut rate prices anyway.
When I buy books from Amazon (yes... I know I should get a Kindle) they arrive heavily overpacked with lots of padding. That's what the packing is for - to protect what's inside against the likely bumps and knocks.
It's like a guitar case. If the case is battered but the guitar is unscathed then the case has done it's job.
