I walked in on TOTO in the shower, all naked and wet, with a camera in my hand, and I dont know who grabbed me, but it was in the neck and he walked me out while I'm in the air....
Haha! In 1988 some friends and I travelled up to Harare to see Sting, Springsteen, Gabriel et all in the Amnesty International concert there. We'd thought (or imagined) that we were amongst the chosen few who actually knew about this show - it had not enjoyed a lot of publicity in the mainstream media, and the organisers seemed to favour the ideological over the pragmatic and appointed Wits University to do the ticketing for them.
We were wrong!
There were massive queues at Beitbridge. It tooks us hours to get through, and this put the kibosh on our travelling plans. We'd planned to stop over at a friend's house in Bulawayo and leave for Harare early the next morning. Well, now it WAS early next morning and we were driving out of Beitbridge.
So we decided to head straight for Harare, not learning from the huge crowds at the border and telling ourselves that there would be plenty of accommodation options in Harare.
Wrong again! We decided to try to talk our way into the Meikles (then the number 1 hotel in Harare). So we arrived and acted rich and important (I did say "act", didn't I?) and were told that sorry, the inn is full. However, it was intimated to us that if we were prepared to insult the concierge with a bribe then a parking space could be found and we could sleep safely in our minibus for the night. 4 of us in a hi-ace was not that bad a proposition, but we would need to freshen up. Further insults secured the keys to a room that was not yet occupied so that we could shower, and a promise that we could help ourselves to coffee in the morning.
The deal was done, and we drew straws to see who would get first dibs at the shower. I won.
So I took the key, caught the lift up to the 4th floor and was greeted by two very large men with bulges under their arms. I meekly waved my key and told them that I wouldn't be long and they marched me to the room in question and made sure I went in there. They were still outside when I left, not hassling me but making sure that I went into that one room and didn't go anywhere else. They were firm, rather than aggressive as they escorted me back to the lift. I asked what was going on and they said "The Boss has this whole floor." I assumed they meant Springsteen, as they were American and the only other party with a plausible claim to being "the Boss" would have been at the presidential residence.
