Pah! Schnaaied by Windows 7 again. Got everything set up with a different machine and a different sound card and STILL there are latency problems. I need to roll my desk top machine back to XP.
Are you using an audio interface, Bob?
Well how the heck do I know? I've got a sound card that accepts an input over a lead, and spits out stuff that Audacity can record.
I suppose there's a built in M$oft audio interface.
I've tried every combination of input and output device in Audacity. I either get the delay due to the latency, or I get nasty noises that have nothing to do with what I'm playing or whether anything is plugged in.
Does it use an ASIO driver? If not, are you using the ASIO4All driver?
Ja well... I've tried ASIO4All on my desktop box and that didn't help matters at all. BUT the version of Audacity I downloaded on the weekend onto my laptop box is newer and might be able to do stuff with ASIO4All.
I've used Audacity and got it to work with my sound interface, although I had followed this guide on setting up WinXP :
http://www.native-instruments.com/knowledge/questions/343/Windows+XP+Tuning+Tips+for+Audio+Processing which is a native instruments guide - but the basics apply to setting up WinXP for any sound interface and is well worth running through.
I'm currently on WinXp ServicePack3 (but also worked on SP2). WinXP should be -at least- on SP2, then it's fairly stable (imo).
If hair pulling has reached balding proportions (err, like me), I can heartily reccomend Reaper (free w/nag screen - only USD50 to licence). The asio/audio interface setup is (again, in my opinion) more user friendly. I've gotten the latency (using Guitar Rig w/Rig Kontrol hardware) reliably down to a playable 4-6ms, but I had to do a whole bunch of tuning on my old laptop hardware (I'm a ex-system administrator, so I kinda enjoyed the hassle).
