Would you pay R100 000 for an Ibanez?

That's what a collector from Bloemfontein just did.
He bought a JEM Evo - a new and very limited edition true replica of Steve Vai's own guitar. Of the first one Ibanez built for him 25 years ago.
The six string replica even has the same dings and scratches. Built in Japan, of course, and just arrived at Toms in Bloem yesterday.
It was signed by Vai on the back and the name "EVO" is written by hand below the bridge.
The Evo replica series was launched at the beginning of the year and, before they were quickly sold out, retailed for just over $10 000 in the US.
SA only got one, which was snapped up by Toms. It is therefore surprising, and extra special, that the local one is numbered "1 of 100".

OK to answer the question as in the title....NO I would not pay that for a repro Ibby or Fender....BUT I would strongly consider paying that for a Gibson. So it depends entirely on one's preferences imho. ?

Must be the same guy. Can't be too many crazy, really rich guys with GAS in Bloem. Of wat praat ek?
BTW, according to Toms they "called a couple of clients" when they heard they got the guitar. It was never displayed or advertised.

Neither would I, but possibly only because I haven' t got R20K for a guitar...
Anyhow, I think it's interesting.
Didn't know there were collectors like that in SA.

TOMS are the Ibanez distributors in SA, that's why they 'snap' them up...only TOMS get them. ?

TOMS Sandton also got one of the Satriani JS20TH models, I think about 80K retail.

I've paid R22k+ on a number of occasions for my Ibbys. Some of the finest guitars I've owned... (Even when directly compared to my Gibsons, Fenders and PRS's...) Would I pay such a premium for an EVO clone? No thanks... The original EVO was just an ordinary Jem 7VWH, but to Mr Vai it just felt and sounded better than the rest and therefore became is favourite axe... The Clone might look the part but it'll never sound and feel like the original EVO, so to me it would be a pointless purchase unless it proves to be a great investment... The original has been retired due to a neck-crack that reached the point of no return. I'd rather buy a standard one but then I'd look at most of Jem range except the white 7VWH's. I'm not a Dimarzio Evolution fan -especially in Alder... Not a massive fan of gold hardware either... (Personal current preference only as I know what good guitars they certainly are...)

I've invested a sizeable chunk of cash and spent a fair amount of time with high-end examples of each of these brands (amongst others) to form what I believe to be an unbiased (yet still personal) opinion... Brand loyalty can sometimes cloud the vision and the brain... I've also been guilty of this in the past, so I'm in no position to point the finger, nor so inclined... Everyone's entitled to their opinion, lol! No matter how informed or misinformed this opinion may be perceived to be... ?

The title of this thread was "would you pay R100k for an Ibanez?" my answer: no, not even probably the most famous one in existence. Why ? I don't like them. They do absolutely nothing for me. Nothing to do with brand loyalty. There are a multitude of other guitars I would pay that sort of money for. A guitar with a built in grab handle is not one of them.

Agreed. If I had that kind of cash, there are other guitars I'd spend the money on. An Ibanez just isn't one of them (and I never really "got" the handle idea...).

I would never buy a guitar that is a replica of some famous musician's guitar, I even would be hard-pressed to buy a signature model. But if you enjoy owning and playing them, more power to you!
