I'm quoting ICM because I think you could do well reading it again. He makes a very good point that the MC is really there to keep the evening flowing. Lots of people think that the job of the MC is to tell jokes, there's nothing worse. Rather make sure that you make the guests feel at home and that the evening flows nicely. Telling jokes come a distant second to this task.
