Hi guys,

just a quick question, what kinda import taxes can i expect if i buy a guitar on eBay and have it shipped from the US to JHB?

Lets, for argument sake say the guitar costs R 4000.

I speak under correction so just double check but you shouldn't pay any import duties on 2nd hand goods.. I believe you pay vat on new items..

Take with a pinch of salt though..

yeah its gonna be (if i win) a 2nd hand guitar. Yeah i also thought charging VAT for used goods is a bit dof.. o well, guess i'll have to wait n see then.

Have the seller specifiy clearly on the waybill that the goods are second hand.. Helps to pre empt any issues

Just had a used amp shipped over from the states, valued at R4080. Had to pay taxes and duties of R750. So its pretty much just 14% plus some extra handling fees I think.
