CDee I think this will end up being one of those typical "new" vs "old" fights... We'll good luck to the guy, hopefully he doesn't get too many death threats. http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/2012/jun/15/3d-printing-revolutionising-guitar-making?newsfeed=true
JeremyE Will be very interesting to hear the tone of those guitars, but one thing for sure is it will give you endless options in terms of designing the aesthetics of the body! Wonder who the first guy will be to 'pimp' one of these with neon lights ?
CDee JeremyE wrote Wonder who the first guy will be to 'pimp' one of these with neon lights ? Hahaha, I was thinking the exact same thing... Tyre flies for a plectrum maybe aswell... ? But I live in V-town so I go there automatically....
Wizard Nice! I look forward to a potential future of parts manufacture being put into the hands of the enthusiast ... or having access to it from an affordable service provider. Damn - maybe I'm too old for this next exciting future to become a practical reality in my lifetime. At minimum, imagine being able to use something like this to quickly shake up prototypes !! Then print yourself the parts to make a CNC machine to manufacture it. I was busy reading an article on kiaat; which is one of my favourite woods. The (small) trees take between 50 and 75 years to grow ... are being cut down at a remarkable rate and aren't being replanted meaningfully. We are possibly the last generation to have affordable and easy access to exotic woods ... so we'd better start looking for alternatives now. Whether this is fast growing stuff (like bamboo) or non-wooden stuff like this. Some precedent in other areas: --> They have been reasonably successful in creating marimba bars by compressing synthetic fibres since the ideal wood (Brazilian Rosewood) is becoming a bit tricky to find. --> Strings themselves (which is where all the sound starts) had biological sources in gut and the like ... and have migrated to metal.
