Neoclassical rock tone

Isn't this great tone for neoclassical rock? This sounds so exquisite to me. For those who know electrics well: How much of this tone can be credited to the Strat?

Combination Strat and Marshall. The Strat neck pickup is one of the wonders of the world IMO - full, round, but still articulate (esp. maple board Strats). The Marshall adds the upper mids and presence sizzle that make it cut through.

Thank you Alan. Why do you say especially the maple board Strats? Does the maple fretboard affect the neck pickup?

Maple boards have a brighter tone, with a faster attack. This affects the overall tone (not just for the neck pickup) but the neck pickup can sound a bit flabby (depends on the tone you dial in on the amp) and the brightness of the maple board offsets that so that you still get some zing.

I find myself using the neck and middle much of the time. Apparently it's sacreligious to use the middle pickup on its own...

I never got on with it (I usually replace position 3 with "bridge + neck" or "all 3 on"), but it's the "meat and potatoes" Strat pickup for many Strat players - incisive enough to cut through but not as edgy as the bridge pickup. Doesn't have much character in comparison to the other two, but that's one of the reasons it sits well in a mix.
