I'll drop a vote for you guys when I get home and can access fb...
But I'm wondering if anyone else feels like I do regarding this "vote to play" trend. (OP, this is by no means aimed at your band ? )
Honestly, having "been around the block" in terms of both regular gigs and fests this is a practice I really hate. The fact that people vote for a band wont actually guarantee that people will go to see them, aka, attend the event. Also, the band with the most votes may not necessarily be the best choices. It's also a bit degrading to bands I think.
It reminds of a story a colleague told me: FHM Magazine had a similar "vote for this girl" thing...I think they do it yearly. One of the girls that made it through last year made it with the help of ONE GUY that spent around R3k on sms entries and a whole load of internet clicks....makes you think.
"Battle-of-the-Bands" contests also mean squat to bands IMO. Sure, you may win some studio time bla bla bla but where does it get you? Criticized by a "panel" of "professionals" that want to hear more of X instead of Y in your songs. Whatever. I have however played a couple of these things quite successfully, albeit against my will though. I will never forget a conversation I had with the organiser of a big yearly battle event. He said: "Did you know that out of all the events we've had for over a decade, only one band that won went on to become something? The Parlotones."
I never thought that the Beatles, Stones, Sabbath, Hendrix or any of those guys had to be voted for to play a gig in their entire careers...please man!!
Thanks for the vote!
I'm totally down with this and agree. Especially on the battle of the bands events.
The voting system is also flawed. The winning band(s) of these voting events are
not always the best band overall. They might just be the band who went through the most trouble or who has the most loyal supporters on getting those votes.
In reference to the "Panel of Professionals", not naming any names, but at one battle most of the judges consisted out of local record company staff. Are they really qualified on judging a rock show? I think we all know the majority of labels in SA are solely after POP and a bit of POP ROCK - if it gets any louder than that then they start rolling eyes.
