Hey guys my band here is the US, got confirmed to play the Reopening of CBGB (CBGB Festival in New York.
Its spokesperson is Krist Noveselic, and there are a bunch of cool bands playing.
We are opening for Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, so its a great great great slot.
We are trying to raise money to rent a van to get all our gear there, so if you have it in you to donate please do, every bit counts, if not and cash is tight maybe just pass it to some friends on facebook or in passing. Not much into begging for money just thought I would post it here for ya'll to check out.
Here are some links to videos and sites, and reviews for the festival and our band, we are one of the independent favorites of the festival. Being from Zimbabwe its quite exciting.

Congrats man
why dont you ask the organisers for some cash upfront to get yr stuff there or ask em to pay the rental company direct?
Bob-Dubery
Maybe they're not getting paid.
This is not unusual. The big names at the festivals get paid, but further down the food chain the expectation may be that you take the gig at your expense for the exposure that it will give you.

GREAT opportunity, beg borrow steal. I went to CBGBs before it shut down, I hope all the killer graffiti is still there, or maybe it's a new venue. They opened one in Las Vegas I believe, not quite authentic!?

The orginal, legendary CBGB OMFUG is gone. There's a festival, using various venues in New York, running under the CBGB name, and plans to re-open in a new venue in NYC.

Flog a few jazzmasters and Dr. Zs. That'll get you your van ? ?
Congrats on the opportunity. Sounds huge.
Without the sweat and grease laid down by the Ramones, The Dolls, Talking Heads, and Blondie - and never cleaned - it won't be the same. ? But still a great high-profile gig.
Psean
Congrats :goodtimes:. Shame it's not the original venue, but still awesome!

yeh the festival itself is held all over NY. CBGB is now moved but apparently they have pasked up the whole thing to a better venue.
Yeh sadly they are not paying lower level acts, they try to give you a decent spot to showcase your music however. similar to SXSW. We did get one free festival pass which in a sense is ou pay along with a good slot.

You are in Florida if I'm not mistaken, the gig in NY, Thats one hell of a trek for a gig, but I suppose its pretty high profile.

That's the deal. GFSA member shooting for greatness. Let's hold thumbs for the future.

Yeh man thats the point.
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah are a pretty big group, best independent band of 2005 I think.
Super Chunk are playing
Guided by voices
Cloud Nothings
the key speaker is Krist Noveselick of Nirvana
Its hailed as the new SXSW festival. Definatly worth the trip. Just trying to fund it via kickstarter. Which also helps out our new EP.

Perhaps you should max out all those credit cards you're no doubt receiving in the mail... that's terrible advice but always a last resort.
Mr-M
Hey Mika, congratulations on the opportunity. Hopefully it opens some doors for you guys. 8)

Good luck! I hope that if I need the help one day with my band, others will be willing to help.
If you don't manage to reach your goal, you guys are obviously still going to manage right?
Styles
Congrats Mika ? I hope you guys have lots of fun!

My point is it seems a vast distance to cover, hence the need for funding. Our concept of far in our own country is JHB to CPT.
I suppose this would be a few days worth of driving if you dont fly? Thats fuel, accomodation on the way if you dont sleep in the van, a band cant play on an empty stomach. Would there be toll roads? No label support(?), Hence the need for funding I suppose.
MIKA-the-better-one
Here is how it comes down to it, we make a little money from shows, right now that is all wrapped up in studio time for the new EP.
So its about 30 hours one way straight drive. We will be sleeping in the van, 4 band members and one tech/ everything else man.
Thursday night we play Tampa---- Depart------ 8 hours to Charleston/ Play a show-------- depart---------- Saturday we play DC---- sleep------- Sunday 10am we arrive NY----- Register at Guitar Center--------- Radio at 2-3pm---- sound check 5pm--------- Show at 8:30pm------------ Sunday Drive home straight.
Thats how to have fun I guess, no label support as we are not on a label. Maybe on the drive back that would be a different story. I am not to stressed about labels yet (we have avoided a few Tampa based labels) preferably NY based.
I think as a band money is always tight and kick stater was or is a great way to fund things that need to get done.
The $500 to raise is just to cover basic travel, food and stuff falls to us. We can live pretty basic though, give me guitar tubes and I am good ?
if we fail in our fund raiser things will still happen just it will be a lot harder.
Thanks to all so far
PeteM
Safe travelling Mika... have fun.
