Congratulations, Zark ........ that Ibby looks awesome ........ :applause:
I have never even held a 7 string in my hands ........ ☹
Thanks! I should've tried a 7 earlier. I'm really enjoying it. Not only the extra string and all it offers but also the feel of the bigger neck and fuller tone + insane sustain... It feels like you can go to war with this Axe.

wow that is BEAUTIFUL! Really classy looking!
Im in a similar situation as far as fewer guitars and more playing goes, hence the sale of my strat since I have another...plus I have extra pickup combinations I can change to with the same guitar which can cater to changes in my musical tastes and tones if necessary without the need for buying a new guitar.
I must try a 7 or 8 string at some stage...

Great score Zark! I've played one before, and i found the neck quite different to the RG7620 i owned at the time. It felt a tad heavier too..but on the upside had sustain for days.
Congratulations!
Thanks Arjun.
Yes, the neck is fat for a RG format Ibby but fast as lightening... Spent some time with her this evening and I'm thoroughly impressed and surprised by how responsive the guitar is to volume control on all the pup settings. This guitar oozes with tone... Sho, I'm happy with her and its only been a day!

+1. I found it cleaned up nicely and yes, the neck did feel a tad chunkier than the 7620.
Congratulations! I reckon the only thing left to get is a fan ?

I'd say go for it as soon as the opportunity presents itself! Definitely worth it -even if you don't need to play lower than E. The seven just opens up so many more possibilities and the bigger neck (on the UV, at least) ads so much to the guitars inherent tone. I have to turn the volume down to stop her from sustaining on certain solo parts where previously I had to work the note to keep it ringing. The 8-string bug hasn't bitten me, but I'll never say never... (again) ?

I prefer the chrome P/G, but if you would prefer more of an understated and "stealth" look, the black works too.
Psean
The black is definitely cool in an understated way but it makes it look a bit like an RG. The chrome really stands out. I'd stay with it
ZarK
Thanks for the replies so far. Appreciated.
(For some reason I expected the exact opposite reaction to the pickguard options...)
Neon-Gecko
A chrome guard wouldn't be at the top of my list, but with the hardware and that awesome looking binding, chrome is the only choice on that guit IMHO...
ZarK
Agreed. I'll stick with the mirror-pickguard for now. It does bind all the chrome hardware together nicely...
ZarK
Anyone who continues to believe that Ibanez guitars do not have good (read: great) tone, certainly hasn't spent time with a Universe... I'm blown away by the playability and variety of tones of this axe... (and I'm not easily satisfied...)

The neck is "fat"? Methinks your little six string fingers are getting confused by the width of a REAL guitar neck, misinterpreting it as thickness. ? ?
What have you been playing that makes a UV neck feel fat? Because that UV neck is much thinner than a J Custom, which you have two of. Unless my 7 string J Cusom neck is very different from your 6 string ones. It's not *as* thin as the RG7620 but not too far off. The J Custom feels positively chunky in comparison. (Oh wait you have JEM too. Probably a slight bit thicker than that. But "fat"??) I have a Dean RC7 which is officially the insanely thinnest 7 string neck out there and still the UV neck does not even approach feeling fat to me... just wondering haha.
That mirror pickguard is a scratch magnet. But it looks malformed with the black, to my eyes.
Ridiculous playability on this guitar, as you say. Basically shreds itself. (Or in the words of a friend of mine: "Even I can sweep on this thing!" ? ? )
Blaze Customs - yes. The single coil and neck pickups are nice. But I loathe and despise the original DiMarzio Blaze II bridge pickup. (Or is it Blaze...I think it's called Blaze II...who cares.) Glassy scratchy highs, scooped mids, muddy lows. The worst design choices to make on a 7 string pickup in every respect. Terrible in a heavy mix, terrible. (Strong subjective bias alert. Of course.)
So yes I tried an Evolution 7 (dry, lifeless) and now it has the Blaze Custom permanently so far. The Custom has exactly the same 'character' as the Blaze II, so it still feels like a UV, but with fuller mids, crisper lows. Highs still have that glassy character in a good way. And 'juicy' instead of the Evolution dryness.
Still want to try the Seymour Duncan actives on this guitar.
ZarK
:? ...pffft ...6-string fingers... (:roflmao?
Yes, from playing Ibbys forever I can say without any doubt that the neck feels fat compared to the others! ? Thick+wide=fat! ? It feels great, though and I'm not comparing it to a Les Paul or the likes, just other RG Ibbys. BTW. Both 6- and 7-string RG J-Customs have thinner necks than Jems and UV's... (I can confirm this with regards to the 6-strings. Haven't tried a 7-string JC yet but on paper it's neck is definitely thinner...) The extra width is a non-issue although going back to my Strat feels like I'm holding a (lovely) toothpick, lol! Spec-wise the neck should be as thick as my Jem but the perceived feeling is that you're left with much more wood in hand with the Universe. (I suppose I can expect any kind of reply to that...) It just feels fatter/fuller to me and I like it. I'll give it more time before I reach a final conclusion but at this stage I think I prefer it to the rest. My J-Customs only have 17mm thickness at the nut... I haven't played a RG 7620 before...
So in summation: In this case fat = great! ?
I'm very impressed with all 3 Dimarzio Blaze pups in this guitar. They respond very well to volume and tone control and sound great for clean-, crunch- and high gain tones to me. Equally good for lead and rhythm imo. The only one I'd probably swap out at some stage is the bridge pup for a Blaze Custom. I too love the character of the Blaze pups in the Universe and see no reason to search any further. I just know that I'll grow tired of the scooped mids at the bridge at some stage... (Haven't tried them in the mix yet but on their own, I really cannot fault them at all ...at this stage...) I've never been a fan of Evolutions...
Thanks for all the feedback. I'm very impressed by this guitar's feel, tone and sustain. If I still feel the same after the honeymoon phase, my 6-string Ibbys are in very real danger of getting passed on. (I have buyers for each of them already...)
