Site Move - Teething Issues

Welcome to GFSA in ZA! It's always been prohibitively expensive to host the forum in ZA but that's changed recently thanks to all the luvverly international bandwidth cables that have been laid recently (and are still planned to be laid). Most notably, Seacom has really improved things and we're finding a lot more local companies offering uncapped hosting and stuff like that. The benefits of hosting locally are mainly speed but, also, for those of you on local-only caps, you should be able to browse the forum where before you couldn't. But of course, there are some teething issues: I seem able to use the forum fine but not a single other soul has posted since last night, 8pm. So if you're seeing this, post something! The site is now hosted on virtual server until I can get myself a dedicated ZA server. That means we might have a few database slow-downs as memory is limited. Keep that in mind when posting. Other stuff might have not gone according to plan during the move. If you notice something, post about it and, if it's a problem I can confirm, I'll hopefully be able to fix it. Otherwise, enjoy!

Yup the only thing that has changed is the removal of the (rather large) fake "board" for the classifieds on the home page. Wasn't really functional and took up a lot of space on what is an increasingly busy home page.

Your ads are still there in the categories. Latest ads show on the home page in list form and you can click on "List All" next to the "Recent Listings" header on the classifieds homepage to see all recent ads.

one other thing i notice, and i havent noticed it before...

i recently started using the latest opera mini 7 on my nokia E7..
And i suddenly find there are "hotlinks" within browsing the forum..
For instance, Mika the better one's name... Mika gets highlighted and it links to amazon selling mika cd's.
there are one or two other examples, just cant think of them right now...

i thought its an opera thing... seems it a skimword thing?!
just noticed it in FF 12.0 on the macbook thread...

is this the price for a free forum??

I just noticed that today too. I'm not sure where they are coming from (nothing in the page source). I mentioned the Sesame Street music program earlier and it linked it to the Sesame Street site.

Adblock plus blocks them, but I keep ABP disabled on GFSA.

I am seriously battling to see the forum. I can get onto the main page,then as soon as I click a link it 404's. refresh, try again. goes once and then same thing again.

I added the SkimLinks but it was only supposed to be for anonymous users! Not members!

I've just fixed it. Now you'll only see it if you're not logged in.

Donovan, no idea what to do to help you. What ISP are you with?

What error do you get when you try log in?

Donovan, it could be 8ta's nameservers are up to shit. Try Google's instead:

Sometimes the opsys caches DNS lookup results. This cache can be cleared, but the method varies from opsys to opsys so GIYF.

I didn't start seeing speed increases until I cleared the DNS cache on my PC.

tried clearing all history as well, different DNS and all. I might try a different ISP to see as I haven't done that.

We recently updated the software for the classifieds. What specifically is not working for you?

We're moving to another server (a dedicated one) and I'll do a full domain-update at that time which could fix things for you but that's only likely happening towards the end of the month.
