lol, I posted this in the past and a lot of people on here were offended by it because of his bad language and guitarist-hating-engineer-POV.

If you can handle his cynical, jaded, abrasive rants, then it's a complete gold mine of professional AE technique.

The guy that wrote it actually recorded a lot of records I listened to growing up and if you're a hardcore, punk, grindcore, or emo kid, you should listen to him.

No, I will not disclose his real identity so don't even ask. If you do your research, you'll find out. 8)

When you TAKE SOMETHING AWAY and you start thinking, "Oh f**k, we can't lose THAT".... whip the fader down to silence. Get a quick re-adjust for yer ears/brain and bring it back up. You'll be AMAZED at how often this little stunt will SAVE YER A**.

Yeah, the first quote you cited is a classic problem of subjectivity. I don't think the subjective nature of audio is driven home enough and even if it is, a lot of people still seem to think that there's some secret weapon that overrides it.

Your ears fatigue quickly. That is why we take all these precautions to prevent this like listening at lower volumes (83dBSPL), using monitors that have less of a fatiguing effect, and taking ear breaks. Ear breaks are probably the best remedy.

What he's talking about is pretty much like a palate cleanser. When something is there all the time, it's easy to get desensitized to it. Taking it out for a few seconds helps the brain/ear reset so that you can have a more objective view when it is reinserted into the mix.

It's amazing how this sort of thing can improve your POV.

Well it does seem awfully interesting...now if only I could understand it....

Personally I like the overly arrogant POV he's coming from. Musicians often think we know what we're doing when it comes to our instrument of choice, but seriously we often dont know jack shit about recording it. I would love to sit in a room with this guy and just talk about recording heavy guitars.

I'm only read about a third of the way through, book marked the page for future reading.

BTW, SnapcaseZA, nice to see someone other than me that's heard of the band Snapcase.

Epic band back in the late 90's to early 2000's. I saw them in the states with Deftones and Quicksand back in 1998. Someone set off a smoke bomb in a dustbin during Deftones set and the riot police came and gave everyone the beat down.

Freak, not many people know of Snapcase, I'm jealous you've seen them. Definitely one of my favourite bands, would love to see them again for reunion shows and all that, seems like they've toured with Refused too - also reunited currently.

By the way, on your site you got some great recordings, esp your band. Kiff guitar sounds there!
